Is it a shrub or a small tree? Any chance of a picture of the whole plant. And a location would be very helpful.

At the moment I’m going to suggest Arbutus but I’d like to see more of the habit.

If that bloom is current - flowering now - I will also suggest Arbutus, probably Arbutus unedo. Few other ericaceous plants flower at this time of year.

From previous postings, I believe the OP is located in the PNW......which would make sense for this plant as well.

Definitely Arbutus unedo which has basically been a standard item in local independent garden centers for a long time. However it is native to Ireland and the Mediterranean region, does not like planting locations very far from salt water.

Round here they become small trees over twenty feet tall but they can be pruned. There’s a big one outside my doctor’s surgery. It’s up to the roof. We’re not that close to the sea. About 25 miles atcf. I’ve also seen them well inland in Italy.

You're indicating your hardiness zone as possibly as high as 9. And depending on where in Italy you are talking about it could easily be a quite mild winter area also.

Tivoli. I’m not arguing with their liking a mild climate. Just pointing out that close proximity salt water isn’t a sine qua non.

It is here in the PNW, where I was addressing my comment to the original poster - who believes they are in USDA 7b. And note also that I posted "too far" - as in there is a point where the distance becomes too great for this species to be relied on to make a lasting, undamaged specimen that doesn't get hit during sharper winters*. Unlike numerous others that can and do grow both near the coast and in the Cascade Mountains, even beyond.

*Even in USDA 8 (Seattle for instance) there was damage to these in 1990, a year that winter conditions produced across the board damage to local broad leaved evergreens other than types like Hardy Hybrid rhododendrons, heathers, Osmanthus heterophyllus and so on
