What grass to plant??? Looking for suggestions

I'm located in southern California, Hawthorne specifically, a few miles south of LAX. I'm about 3 miles from the coast with a front yard that gets morning sun until mid afternoon. The back lawn gets afternoon sun but not all of it. Some is predominantly in the shade. I would prefer something that doesn't have runners and doesn't get to thick or tall. All suggestions welcome.
