Where is the best place for the sofa?

last modified: 5 years ago

The best layout for my living room is not at all clear to me. The room is 19' 10" x 17' 6" +2' in the bay window area. The bound carpet (red line) leaves a 2' border of the hardwood.

I would like to use the area rug (8' 3" x 11') I have, as it's not too traditional or too modern. Do all the furniture legs need to be on the area rug when it's layered over another rug?

The sofa & 2 leather chairs have to stay. Sofa is 90" L x 38" D x 36" H. The walnut library table in the corner is 26 x 50. (Used for jigsaw puzzles.) I can change out any or all of the tables.

I have a large secretary desk (50"w x 20" d x 90" h). Should it automatically go in the largest space? (Which is left of the sliding french doors.) Or a different corner? And I have a pair of bergere chairs I want to add.

Also, on my room drawing, yes, there is a tv den next to the living room. It was originally the formal dining room for this house, but it's not large enough for our family.

All suggestions appreciated!

Photos not loading, so I will a couple at a time. Starting with the foyer, & then the upper left corner. (Bay window faces north.)

I'm really hoping for some regulars with a great eye for design will comment!

Maybe I should change the area rug, or not have one at all?

Thank you Maureen! Yes, the lay out is a difficult one.

    To answer your questions:

The red line is the off-white bound carpet. I also have the 8' x 11' area rug layered over that. Open to changing or eliminating that.

The den has a matching sofa/recliner & that's all it needs. The pair of leather chairs could move to a large bedroom. I like the bergere chairs, but they will need to be reupholstered if they stay.

Yes, open to all new tables. Do you see a narrow sofa table working?

We have already centered the secretary in the 105" wall space, and we should be able to move the sofa, etc., by this weekend.

I already have my curtain rods and a linen fabric for drapes. I was planning to hang the rod for the bay window out in front, rather than in the bay, so it is the same height as the other window.

The bay window faces north and the other faces west. The wall color is BM Stonington Gray, but always reads blue to me. (Blue is my favorite color.) Trim is BM Vapor (a creamy white).

Light fixture & curtain rods are matte black. I would like to bring in some antique gold/bronze accents for warmth. Floors are rustic maple with an oiled finish.

Would also like to tie new rugs in the entryway, color wise (2 - 4' x 6').

I want the room to be fresh & stylish, but not stiff or formal. We have 6 married children and 15 grandchildren (so far).. As far as space - there is also the den, a fireplace room, and a full finished lower level, but still, it can get a little crazy.

Now I see the layering. I think the rug is a bit too large and not the right style. In regards furniture placement the front feet only can be on larger rug per below or the placed entirely on the larger rug. See what works when you are placing furniture.

Since the Bergere chairs have to be reupholstered, maybe use the leather chairs in the meantime (add blue cushions). Upholstering is expensive (I’ve had to do my Bergere chairs twice) and you want to get the room down pat, so the fabric reflects your room.

You could put a sofa table behind the couch in the bay; will be pretty from outside and will also force the couch forward so pendant light is over coffee table.

    Great about the drapes!

Blue is my favourite color as well and could be incorporated with a distressed vintage rug and indigo cushions would be lovely, mixed with creams.

Here is a 4x6 rug that would suit the above, as an example. Msy be blue overload, but you could go in many different directions.

The gold/bronze can be incorporated with lamps, accessories on coffee table, etc.

Going to look for table ideas and will send another post

Didn’t take as long as I thought! Remembering your black light fixture and curtain rod, not wanting to compete with gaming table and secretary wood tone and styles, and knowing you have 15 grandchildren (lucky you), maybe black could be the way to go.

    Good luck with everything.

Thank you for the ideas and suggestions. It will be a "work in progress" for awhile yet. It is hard to know what to do about tables, as I do worry about hard edges for the little ones!

If I accomplish furniture arrangement and drapes before Christmas, that will be a start!

Consider an ottoman in a dark color re stains🥴 and will also suit the rest of your furniture

I like that idea! Solves several problems. I think the area rug was holding me back in a lot of ways.

I realized that I was including lots of blue ideas, but be careful not to overdue and just use in 2 or 3 spots.

ie: blue rug/cushions, or If going without rug overlay - upholstered coffee table/cushions /Bergere chairs

Thanks Maureen! I wanted to be sure I got the secretary placed correctly. For now, I will go ahead with the drapes, and experiment with the rest of the layout & traffic flow. In the meantime, I will shop for art, upholstery fabric and rugs. If I find something I love, I will post it here for feedback.

Our lower level is getting a complete remodel, & I need to finalize the flooring for that. "Decision overload" right now.
