Need Help With My Dining Room Wall

I always appreciate the feedback in these discussions. This is my dining room which is right off the entry way to the house. I am wanting a fresher look. I don't know what to do with that wall. I need to to bring more color in and get rid of that light fixture for something else. But first the wall.

I am not much for trendy looks, but I do want creates interest. Thank you in advance to those who respond.

Molding!!! Board and baton!! Some sort of design on the wall will look amazing!!
If your not into that you can do a wallpaper. Or even some molding with wallpaper also

Will you post a few more views? If you really want wow factor, beef up and extend the chair rail all the way around the room, add interesting paneling below, and wallpaper or great art above.

Start by deciding what color you want to bring into the room and what type of art, area carpet you would like.

Pick an area carpet, pick art and then pick wall color and window treatments if applicable.

Then you can add additional color through chair upholstery, centerpiece, table runner and displayed items on sideboard.

The chair rail doesn't go all the way around. I want to replace the china cabinet with a buffet. I am going to get rid of the corner cabinet and that little corner table/cabinet. They were my mother-in-laws that we had repainted. But just want something more stylish. It's pretty much a blank canvas

make the chair rail consistent all the way around or remove it all. still wallpaper the entire room or if you keep the chair rail wallpaper above it. would look great either way IMO. i even think the china cabinet would look great if you want to keep it. it definitely brings in a farm cottagey feeling so if that is the feeling you want, id suggest keeping it. when you say stylish, what does that mean to you?

Just something updated but timeless looking. the China cabinet just feels “ grandma looking” if that is even a word. I guess it’s because I have had it 47 years. Of course the hubs would be happy to keep it since it is his mom’s.

I had a China cabinet similar to yours, just take the top off and use the bottom for buffet. I hung pictures above, but a mirrow would also look nice

Lana, my guess is that you want all simple, straight lines, like in your table and chairs. What style do you have in your living room and kitchen?

Great ideas shared. I especially like the board and batten suggestion, with or without wallpaper, depending on your preference. There are so many ways of using it, and it can give you a very updated look with much interest. If you search "board and batten dining rooms," perhaps you could share with us some images you like.

The room is lacking color and texture - paint and fabrics are called for!

Can you turn the table the other way? If so, I'd put the hutch on the far (empty) wall. Then, add a large art piece on the wall that once held the hutch. If you can't turn the table, simply leave as is and add a large piece of art on the empty wall.

However the table lands....make sure to center it under the light fixture; drop the fixture down so it is closer to the table; remove all of the other pieces of furniture except the corner cabinet; paint the room a color from the artwork; and add a rug and draperies.

Consider removing the furniture pieces lining the walls as the styles do not match ...and invest in a drop dead rug that invest in a drop dead

Yes, I do like pretty simple clean lines. My living room is pretty blah... leather couch, a couple of chairs. Remnants of kids. It will be our next project. So many great ideas. Yes, the dining room is lacking color. I tend to go to more subtle, neutral colors and like use pops of color. Unfortunately I cannot turn the table the other way, it doesn't provide enough walk space. I would love to have a round table but it doesn't work either. We are thinking about removing the wall where the hutch is now. That would allow more options on how to position the table and will allow more natural light into out living area as well as just opening it up. (49 year old home) So, I am not thinking too much about the surrounding furniture as much right now because with that wall gone, it will change additional furniture for sure. I do want that wall to pop more and I think a rug is definitely needed. All great ideas.. thankyou to you all!

Hi, You have a nice room with several good features already there; such as the window shutters, natural light, hardwood floors, and your light fixture (which I think looks fine). I think I even see a tray ceiling? Great start! Seems like you just need some nice artwork on that empty wall and perhaps an area rug. As for the China cabinet, if possible, I would remove the top section, keep the bottom half as a buffet and repaint it. Doing those things will completely transform the look of that piece while also keeping your husband happy. Win-Win!

I would add wide crown molding up at the ceiling, window treatments appropriate with your furniture, and large (not oversized, just large) art on that blank wall. I would also add a large area rug which leaves no more than 24” of wood flooring around the room’s perimeter.

Sorry...get a modern rug that nearly fills the room...and then paint the window wall in a pale color that relates to the rug...the table style does not call for more detail trim on the walls or antique side pieces..as it is simple and modern..

Give guests and family something to look at on the walls they are facing. Art, a piece of attractive furniture, or nicely-draped
    windows are welcome additions.

so many excellent ideas... time to make decisions and start shopping

If the table is more interpreted as country..as we can see very little of it...a simpler half wall treatment would fit...

removing walls always lead to much more use and enjoyment of separate dining spaces...but in older homes you always have to be prepared for unexpected challenges and expenses..and frustrating delays...all of which are worth it when it is behind .you

I’d decide first if you are going to take that wall down or not. It may really affect what the proper layout, style, colors, and textures are if things are more open to the other room(s).

There are lots of adjustments that can add to the interest of the room.

    Art for the walls

    Area Rug for the floor

Paint color for the tray ceiling

I'm not sure what color is on the walls so selecting a rug was a bit difficult, but here is at least a jumping off point for you.

Not sure removing the wall will make much difference in how the table fits in its space. I would encourage you to empty the room of everything except the table, chairs and light. Measure the table top and add 36-42" all around it to allow for a rug. With that measurement, how close are you to a standard rug size? Tape that out on the floor around the table. Will the rug run into any baseboard? If not you're good. But how much room between the rug and baseboards do you have open for furniture pieces? If it is likely to be a tight squeeze, you may decide for forego the rug. Personally, I would prefer a rug I was in love with over any additional furniture. There is always the possibility you cold use a floating buffet which could eliminate the conflict between furniture and the rug being in too close proximity.
