Quilting tips for newbies

If you're new to quilting/sewing don't get intimidated with online posts/images from experienced sewers. We all started somewhere. My first time executing a quilt bordered on insanity. It was a queen sized quilt with 3 side panels to fit over a four post bed frame to the floor. I chose this pattern with a zillion little pieces, intersecting each other like they were on a collision course by Georgia Bonesteel. I love her books, work. Never mind the pattern was for an intermediate experience level. Pphhh - I could do it. And do it I did watching hockey, after work, weekends. I put the pedal to the medal on my sewing machine madly spinning the bobbins in bulk. I pushed, pulled the fabric to meet corners. Yup I finished it. It was bulky, rippled, some fabrics looked like they were in severe pain being permanently stretched into position while others sat back like couch potatoes relaxed.

What did I learn?

Don't sew during hockey playoffs when your team is shooting for the Stanley Cup drinking a beer or two. (Okay, I was young - these days it's hot chocolate.)

Don't spin wind your bobbin - you're stretching the thread. It will break or jam in your machine.

Start simple and small so you can enjoy the process.

You will learn from every project - I still do decades later.

Don't compare yourself to sewers who complete many projects during the year.

It's not a race to the finish, it's a skill set you will develop like any craft.

You don't need to buy expensive fabrics.

Charity shop bed sheets, old cotton clothing work great, less stress because it's not expensive.
