Help with my carpet choice!

Hey everyone. I am working on an entire house remodel and I want to carpet the stairs and the upstairs which consists of a hallway and bedrooms. The hallway will be painted in mole's breath by Farrow and Ball (very dark) with a panelled dado in Ammonite (light grey) and the ceilings in Wevet (lighter grey). The bedrooms will be a mix of purbeck stone (mid-grey), lulworth blue, and setting plaster (pink). The house style is Georgian (mid-century build with Georgian features). Other accents in the house are a touch of "Straw" by Farrow and Ball, and Railings (on the staircase balustrade for example, and on some of the woodwork in the bathroom).

So my question is: what is the best color or range of colors for the carpet, and for a family home (albeit a very elegant and well-behaved family) what material (wool, etc) should I use and what style (textured or level loop, cut pile, etc)?

The rooms will be decorated simply with lots of solids - I am not expecting to go with a highly patterned carpet - but a bit of texture in some way (through a weave or fleck for example) would be fine).

Attached is a photo of the staircase (work in progress).

The other rooms (for the record) are a single, double, and queen bedroom.

AGREE WITH PATRICIA ON ALL BUT 4000 K.

pleeeeeze I BEG...........show me a bedroom that needs this. Maybe in a home for the blind. Sorry babe, there just isn't ONE answer for lighting - there's no one answer for anything, actually : )

I'd put a sisal on the stair, and never have to worry about what paint colors are in bedrooms. I would not edge to edge bedrooms with carpet. I'd continue hardwood and use area rugs fitting each decor.

Failing that a wool/nylon blend will outlive you, cleans beautifully. But you need to shop..........locally and tote home samples. There is no other way. Get yourself to a high end carpet dedicated local, NOT a big box.

Stanton, Masland, Rosecore, ..all good places to begin.

Carpeted steps... assume you will never have pets or children, and that shoes are never worn in the house... or, at least, you've got someone else you pay to clean...

Edited to add - just noticed this: "albeit a very elegant and well-behaved family" I *think* that describing your family as "very elegant" means that you pay people to clear regularly, but I'm not really certain.

I find that description of the family quite amusing. As for the carpet I agree with Jan a sisal if you must on the stairs and all the rest the same wood as the main floor. BTW wall color is the last choice you make and never before all the lighting is in and LEDs 4000K and area rugs are just a much more “elegant” choice with wood floors.

We have barber on our stairs in the Hollywood style instillation with expensive padding. It's lasted over 17 years. We are about to replace it, but it's lasted a long time. negative is that it can run if you have pets with nails. we had one area, I just cut it and hot glued it. It lasted for years. If you don't want Barber, then a low profile/Barber mix maybe. That is want we are looking at now. We just installed hardwood floors throughout the first floor. My husband says they are not going on the stairs. He can be clumsy and has fallen in our old house down wood stairs.

Carrie - if anything, one should want carpeted steps if they have children or pets because there is less chance of slipping. I would be more concerned with safety than carpet getting dirty or damaged.
