Help! What to do with Fireplace Wall

last modified: 4 years ago

Hi everyone,

Got a larger TV and need to remove mantle- that was a year ago. Tired of looking at flat wall and old fireplace set up. What should we do? Brick the wall , accent wall? Is it expensive to create a modern rectangular fireplace. looking to remove carpet in room as tie in woodfloor that on rest of main floor too.

The tv is too large to be over that fireplace.

@BeverlyFLADeziner gave you such great visuals.

@BeverlyFLADeziner wow, thanks for layouts! Our kitchen is behind this room- so that’s why we decided to place on wall. Wish I had found this forum earlier! Do the yellow circles represent anything in particular?

here's a slew of ideas. you can decide what you like, if you can DIY, or if you want to buy something ready made

this is the easiest. get a larger console, move the chair where the tree is, get some art around the tv.

if you keep it, why not do a real gas fireplace? this tv is hung a tad high, but I like the rest of it. you asked about an accent wall!

btw, these are easy. 1x1 wood slats evenly spaced across the wall. paint or stain before putting them on the wall.

modify some type of cabinet and shelving. Ikea has a ton of hacks

Seeing your colors, I'll post now, instead of later when accent wall is done.

I'd do full built in storage along the entire wall. You can widen the fireplace molding to better balance the tv above.

@Beth H. : love the pics, especially the dark char wall. question on gas burning fireplace- this is regular wood burning - what would be reason to change?

Say you went with charcoal accent wall - then could lighten the accessories ?

I asked in an other post but have no idea on blinds vs curtains and/or both. are u suppose to pick curtains then choose paint to match or contrast?

@calidesign really like the built in. Do u think that works with a dark contrast wall? Also for fireplace, I like the more modern rectangular fireplaces- is that reasonable cost to change?

create a floor to ceiling surround for the fireplace and give it depth, once it's done if you don't want to place the tv above it purchase a media console place with tv opposite from sectional.

Do u know what material is on the wall? Is this wood paneling?

Depends how new wood floor and then rug looks. Do you want to buy now instead of wait?

Do you like tone of above gray oak I added?

you have a regular wood burning? sorry, for some reason I though you had a faux fireplace or mantle for show!

I love this wall w/your furniture. Here's the how to on this wall:

    https://construction2style.com/tutorials/how-to-diy-a-vertical-wood-slat-wall/

you could get a few other accessories like shown in the pic.

if you do the black, I'd suggest doing the other walls in a pale gray or white

I love the coffee table, and a similar rug for your room

they have panels like this. (which cost more)

Or, you can DIY it. they have the tutorial here

    https://lovecreatecelebrate.com/how-to-make-a-diy-wood-slat-accent-wall/

You could get a plywood board and rip it to 1 or 2" slats, or, buy 1x1's or the 1x2's common boards

have an orbital sander? sand all of them until the faces are super smooth and stain or paint.

Paint your wall black first, and then install the slats with finishing nails

They have all the plans and measurements on the site so you can copy this exactly! I love this one.

these are 1x2 and she left them the wood color. if you want the wood, I'd do walnut and just coat them with a tung oil. no need to stain.

    here's another layout option.

amazing looking, right? here's it's shown w/the white walls

(she actually did a very dark green on the wood)

This is kitchen that is behind living room, eventually we are going to replace black appliances to stainless and we’re thinking on changing cabinet to common white.

Is that a linear fireplace under all those stockings?

    thank you nj. very sweet.

tried to photo shop some of this wall into your room.

If you could do the wood floor in here, I'd try and get it all the same color. can the other flooring be refinished?

do you like lighter, more natural, or darker?

Alan, here are some accessories. (Should you decide to go w/the black slat wall) And since you have the bright white window shade, I'd probably lighten the pillows and do some other whites to coordinate w/it

all those solid pillows you have aren't working w/this white blind. try something like this.

then bring in a little white side table, black/white pot w/green plant, a black/wood table lamp.

Put it all on a large area rug that works w/all the tones.

I like the gold velvet side chairs too

If you want to mimic the rug they have in the slat wall pic, you could do something like this. Notice the wood tones (if you wanted you could paint the wall black and then do the wood slats in this color), the white accents, the tall plant, etc

    @BeverlyFLADeziner no it’s a traditional fireplace

I like the more modern feel of linear fireplace

Yes the wood floor can be refinished and it runs through majority of main floor. How about curtains to cover the white blinds? I agree with your point on contrast. Like the grey rugs and gold chair option.

Funny we have this, just never knew what to do with it

@everdebz yes we have kids, like more modern table

Everdebz, do you remember where you found that gorgeous multicolored rug. The one posted with the comment, “Do you want softer or more contrast...” It has just the colors I’m looking for.
    Thanks!

Yes, you can do a modern fireplace design and still incorporate builtins to provide storage. Light or dark colors for the wall can work, but I'd wait to decide on your flooring first. You may change your mind on going dark depending on what color you stain the floors. Your blinds are fine. It doesn't look like you have room for drapes with your current placement of the sectional, unless you're planning on changing your furniture. If you need to change the blinds for some reason, you could go with roman shades, but you may need to split them into three separate ones since your window is so large. I like the lightweight ones you have now. I think you need a large, square coffee table.
