Rubyclaire - another pantry project . . .

Today's blog post on a blog I read is another pantry update. I'm not sure if your shelves would wrap or what you had planned, but I like how she used the corner space. Painted shelves, although she had painted shelves before, just used a new color. I would love to find one of the baskets that hangs on her door! She is always so good about including sources at the end of her post - I thought some might be interested in the storage containers she uses.

The labels would be over-kill for me :)

And too funny - but here is another pantry with paper towels in the pantry!!

Once again, this is a pantry for decorative items. The items themselves are lovely, they are not boxes of Minute Rice. (which are OMG red). And do people normally "decant" drygoods into plastic containers?

Yes, it's pretty. No, it's not realistic.

Here's my pantry. Pretty, no. But I know where everything is. (I do store my sugars in airtight containers.)

You'd think I would care more about the aesthetics of this space after actually decorating my clothes closet, but I can't see going to great lengths to disguise food products or hide them in the pantry. That said, I could stand to straighten this up a bit!

Thanks Tina - impressive the blogger tackled building the shelves herself! Lover her finished pantry! To mtn's point, mine is neve going to look as "pretty" as I am going to store more random food items (and not decanted into lovely containers). My goals for this pantry makeover are to re-paint, remove the wire shelving, replace with solid shelves, and to achieve a more functional storage space out of my odd little pantry closet.

I have bookmarked her resource list and IG story of her pantry makeover for future reference. Thanks for sharing!

As I said in the other thread, it's not unrealistic if you have pretty-ish things you need to store. It's unrealistic if it's supposed to be what most people think of as a pantry; it the non-perishable contents of your grocery bag. I keep the non-perishable contents of my grocery bag behind closed doors, and behind the door you enter into my "pantry". So it can be doable if you organize/edit/curate with that in mind. And, it sure is pretty!

I don’t get “de-canting” (except wine!). I put flour and sugar into airtight canisters, but I have a friend who OPENS the packages of crackers and puts them into a container.

My pantry, which you shall not see a picture of anywhere ever, is organized in a fashion that suits me. It is similar to Oco’s. I can tell DH to look to the right on the bottom shelf to find the olives. I know pasta is on the second shelf up to the left. That is enough for me.

But, really ... don't be giving me thoughts about embarking on a pantry project of my own. It's cold and snowy, I've been indoors for days, and I may be feeling a wee bit suggestible.

I think my point was lost LOL. Yes, to whoever mentioned it - this blogger and her sister (I think they team blog not sure) do build some things. I am amazed at some of the female bloggers and the things they build. Thank goodness the mr. is handy, because I am not much of a builder!!

My point was to show Ruby the wrapped/painted shelves. This is a blogger and much of her content is projects she does for her home. She seems well organized and yes, I'm sure she wants pretty content for her readers. My pantry doesn't look like that because I don't use all the containers she does (although I do have some canisters and I love baskets in the pantry) and I'm not saying a pantry should look like that. Just thought it might give some ideas. After @rubyclaire shared her inspo picture I did have thoughts of painted shelves for our pantry. Maybe a project we embark on at some time, but I came to my senses and realized we have enough projects to finish before taking on something else! :)

Oh - regarding decanting - this woman has 2 or 3 children. I image there are lots of boxes of cereal (which is a rarity in our house), chips, etc. Cereal seems to be something than will go stale pretty quickly. I can see decanting it. I would imagine the other items are easier for children to see, and less messy, than multiple plastic bags and boxes. I do like baking items in containers. I think for things like that that are not used often, they stay fresh longer in a tight fitting container than in the bag they come in. JMHO

I had cereal storage things, for our second home. I wanted to keep cereal there without it getting stale. The problem was LIFO. There was a layer of cereal on the bottom that had been there who knows how long!

Missed your response Bpath. I noticed the pretzels. Who knows? Maybe she isn't anal about it? Maybe the kids mix things up? I don't know. Again, my main intent was to show painted, wrap around shelves.

Have a great day gals! Gonna get out in this SUNSHINE!!!

I remember packages by their color, typeface, etc.

    me too!

    I don’t get “de-canting”

The bloggers do it so they have items to link for a commission.

Tina,I do love the painted shelves, and the labels! My pantry is too small for labeling to make sense, although we do have some semblance of order going on (which changes, depending on who is doing most of the cooking during a time period). A shelf each for Pastas, grains, baking, cereal, cans, snacks, and bottles on the bottom. Of course there is some intrusion lol.

I did label the spice turntables in their narrow cupboard. A-L, M-Z, and blends and baking on the top. I try to keep the jars in order at least by first letter. It’s not OCD, it‘s survival. The the tighter the space, the more organized it has to be. Of course, DH who wants all the spices in identical jars does not believe in the alphabet, so I just move them around when I cook.

For wrapping around a corner, I think that all depends on how you use the pantry. It seems to me that the things in the corners become hard to get at, if you fill it up. Me, I like shallow racks or hanging things at the perpendicular wall.

I had to double-check just now, but the top 2’ of my pantry is painted a very light blue, I think it’s left from when the house was built in the early ‘60s. The rest of it is kind of a cream. It may have started life as a broom closet, judging by some remnants, and the shelving was added later when the owner realized there was NO PANTRY AT ALL. But that is all to say that the color of my pantry is rarely seen, but probably because it’s just a narrow reach-in, with no light fixture.

(Yes, I always have grand plans for my pantry, but we moved in quickly and launched right into the school year so the pantry was filled before we could paint it, and doing it now would start a “if you give a moose a muffin” domino row.)

@bpath the labels are just too much for me. LOL Mine is arranged similar to yours - grouped.

It's only the Mr. and I, and we know where things are. I liked in the pantry I shared, the items she had in the corners. I don't have pitchers, cake stands, etc. in our pantry - only food, other than the very top shelf - which I can't reach. That shelf mainly houses items to take food in, cookie tins used for gift-giving, picnic supplies, small cooler, etc. The rest is food stuff. I don't have any cleaners, etc. in the pantry. Mine is not deep enough for wrapped shelves although I should use some hooks or narrow racks, down the sides - but honestly, I have enough room just using the shelves and floor space. A pretty light fixture would be lost in our pantry as the light is well up above the top of the door. But that's fine. I'm going to keep the idea of painted shelves in the back of my mind . ; )

What's with the labels? She can see everything.

I imagine the labels are for the other people in her household! For putting things back, not taking them out!

For corner storage in my pantry, I use a turntable. There were several sizes available and i found the one that fit my space the best. One turntable has fats, like all of my bottles of various oils and the jars of coconut oil, etc plus liquid sweeteners (corn syrup, agave nectar, and hone). Another turntable has vinegars and other liquids like soy sauce. The bottom turn table is where I put the bottles of condiments. I find the turntables prevent accidents from people moving bottles around to find just what they are looking for.

I would love to put labels like that in my pantry to help others put things away properly. However, the result would be DH putting up groceries and later telling me, "Yeah, I know that you want this put where the label is, but I think it goes better in such and such a place." Since I buy in bulk, a lot of things are decanted. However, chops, crackers and the like never so because those bags generally tend to not last very long.

Tish! I didn't think about buying in bulk and thus using decanters. That makes perfect sense!

I had to laugh about your husband. I am a bit particular about how I like things put in our master bathroom. Especially the towels. I fold them a certain way and I like them stacked a certain way. Makes my husband crazy. I usually don't complain to him, because I'm happy he helps put up laundry and groceries, etc. but often I restack the towels. LOL But yes, I can see him moving something in the pantry because "it fit better".
