I need help with my bay laurel

It grew in a pot for about 6 years by which time it needed too big a pot so I planted it. By then it was about 6 feet tall and pretty bushy. Looked fine for 2 years, then year before last…summer… on 2-3 branches the leaves all dried up (I harvested them of course). No new branches came up. Last summer same thing but 2 new branches came up from the ground. It no longer looks like the lovely shrub I had although on all the branches it does have the leaves look great. I fertilize it, give it magesium and check for bugs. None of the websites, including U of FL, and my county extension agent have any help so I thought to come to the site with the most experienced gardeners.

I grew one when I lived up north for many years so I'm pretty familiar with the growth habits and this one is worrying me.
