I have read that the fat casing is weak and very vulnerable to soap and detergent. In addition, and this can be verified on the internet, the virus has a short life on fabric. My armchair quarterback guess is any moisture the virus has is absorbed and then dries out. Studies have shown it lives longer on hard, nonporous surfaces.

This article by the Cleveland Clinic, who I trust, says, “As you can imagine cardboard has little microscopic holes in it, so the virus doesn’t like it very much,” says Dr. Esper.

“And it doesn’t last too long on fabric either, typically less than a day.”

I have not increased detergent dosing because my skin allergies would go into overdrive, As long as my clothes are clean, they are virus free, IMHO. I wash our cloth face masks in water that is 85-104°F, depending on which type load of laundry onto which they are tossed.

Our outerwear, shoes, hair, etc. all can pick up the virus as we walk about public spaces. All I can do is keep plenty of distance from those who are not wearing a mask, including those who do not wear one properly.

OTOH, I wipe down all groceries with sanitizing wipes before putting them away. The virus can live much longer on those surfaces, including in the freezer.

Unless someone works in a hospital or care center and is washing their work clothes at home, no changes should be needed to wash routines. I never wash in cold. As long as common sense wash temps are used and normal detergent COVID should be nothing to worry about.

I am way more worried about Noro virus than I am COVID.

All the years I owned a FL and I would not have considered a tablespoon or teaspoon's worth of powder acceptable unless I was just laundering things that had been in storage. For a TL, not even worth discussing those amounts unless using a GE mini-basket; even then a teaspoon would not do it for me. I have read a number of articles that give the same information as what Cavimum discussed. I wash our masks regularly with a load of clothes, so they get warm water and good exposure to detergent. I am not as concerned about Covid on our fabrics as I am on our skin.

I won’t comment on whether or not laundry needs to be treated to remove the COVID virus. However, Dadoes you are correct, the concentration is important IF you want to use detergent to inactivate an enveloped virus.

I used to use a detergent called Triton X-100 to inactivate a feline virus in a laboratory. Foaming wasn’t necessary, and we didn’t heat it. Here is the abstract of a paper that discusses this detergent and inactivation of enveloped viruses.
