I'd also bet it's the door bell.

Unscrew and disconnect one of the wires and see if your doorbell still works.

Thank you Jim and Greg. The device is labeled Nutone Scovill. The photos on line indicate that it is a transformer.

Is this definitely for a doorbell? or could it also be for a bathroom or kitchen exhaust fan? At one time I had all three of these nutone devices in my house but no longer. I replaced my doorbell and exhaust fans years ago and this may be a legacy device for a doorbell that I no longer use.

I will take your suggestion and try disconnecting the wire to see if it currently used for the doorbell. If not, I suppose I should just remove it.

I remember NuTone Scovile as a fan. NuTone did also make door bells.

Probably a fan, door bell would have thinner gauge wire?

These are typical attributes of a doorbell transformer.

This is a doorbell transformer. 16 volts a.c. low voltage 10 watts output at the terminals where your picture shows the red and white wires. This is definitely NOT used for kitchen or bathroom fans because those fans are 120 volts a.c. connections which do not use 18 gauge low voltage wiring pictured here.
