Need Advice on mini Master Bath DIY Update — No more Tuscan look!

Hi All,

I’ve had a great experience with Houzz advice in the past. You have all helped me with decisions on renovations. Now, I’m back seeking advice on a DIY update to our Master Bath. Limited on budget, but would like to paint the vanity, to help improve the look of the granite (if possible — ugh) and overall update the space. All hard scrapes are unfortunately staying (counters and tile floors). My initial thoughts are to paint vanity one of below:

- light gray

- black

- charcoal gray

- cream

- doubt white would work

I was wondering if gold knobs would look good, or trying too hard on the update. Thoughts?

I was also going to add rugs to help cover the pinky- beige tile. Color and type — need advice. Do I cover majority of flooring, or will that look odd? One more — I was going to add a teak bench in place of the stool at vanity, to add the warm brown. Here are my photos, along with a kitchen & family room pic to give you an idea of taste and style of our home. Thank you all in advance!

I am far from an expert, but I think any light color for the cabinets would only look like you are trying to update.

I think a darker color would work to accomplish that. Of the ones you listed, black or charcoal gray might work, or additionally maybe a deep brown. I can't really tell the colors in your granite if it's black or brown but I think brown might work. I think that cream or white would not update . Your house is beautiful by the way.

    I don't think grey works:

Thanks so much, Melissa R! I like the black.

Salonva, I agree. I don't think white or cream would work. I took these pictures on an overcast cloudy day, so not much light in the bathroom, but still. So much beige.😩 The granite has grays, browns, blacks and you guessed it...beige. Thank you!!

How would a dark navy look?

    J. Cardwell, I love these suggestions — thank you! I keep coming back to wanting the vanity a lighter color (cream or trim color, is a great idea). I’ve thought about black and navy (one of my favs), but I just feel like it won’t look right. I like a light bathroom. I’ve looked into some greige’s and was going to pick up swatches. Our kitchen/fam room is BM Revere Pewter. Our designer helped us blend our current beige neutrals with this color and I’ve been thrilled with the result (w/out having to repaint our entire house after we purchased. It was freshly painted in SW Neutral Ground).

I’ve also thought of adding a Rattan pendant (chandelier) over the tub. To bring in the beige in a different way.

I wanted to get chips of Classic Gray, Wish and Revere Pewter.

Do you think framing the large mirror in a certain trim color would work and make a difference?

Your trim color or the white from your kitchen cabinets will help to get away from the Tuscan look. A dark vanity will not accomplish that IMO. Framing the mirror in white might work as well. My original idea of 2 mirrors is problematic because you need a mirror over your vanity. The color on your walls look ok but I would also paint your sink alcove the same as the rest of your walls, right now the alcove looks white. A large rug or runner in front of your sinks would also be a good idea. They have washable ones on a website called Rugable.

Thanks Jeanne! When we moved in a few years ago, I was not used to the yellow ness of the bathroom and I painted the alcove myself. Probably not my best idea. Since we updated the sconces and put whiter bulbs in.

What type of pendant over tub do you think would work?

Our kitchen cabs are BM White Diamond. Amazing color and actually an extremely light gray. I have a bit left and I’m excited to try on the vanity.

Thanks for the Ruggable suggestion. That’s perfect.

For chandelier over tub maybe something similar to the one over your table.

    Something like this?

Or this? Since we don’t really use this light, I’d like something that’s not clear so it shows up during the day, without being turned on.

Was thinking of the one over your dining table, kind of a modern take on a chandelier but needs to be the right scale for the room

    Hi All,
I'm posting my AFTER pics. Painted cabs -- sanded, primed and painted (a lot of work!😳) but I'm very pleased with finish and result. Thanks for the input on colors and ideas.

well, that looks great!! Glad you didn't listen to me lol.

Enjoy your new bathroom. I particularly love the wall color with it all. Did you change it? Is it RP or?

Wow! Looks great and the counter top no longer looks so busy. Amazing that painting the cabinets solved that so easily.

This looks great! What paint colors did you end up using on the vanity and walls?

Thank you! It isn't Revere Pewter (that's our kitchen/family rm). I painted the vanity SW Neutral Ground (same as trim) and the walls Neutral Ground at 150%. I like it a lot. I no longer dislike Neutral Ground, it is actually a really pretty color and works well in our lighting. Not to mention looks great against black items, furniture, pics, etc.
