I've thought from time to time about teaching myself to crochet. Actually, a colleague "attempted" to teach me a few years ago, but she and I didn't get along too well anyway, and I truly think she set me up for failure. She made tons of baby blankets, and that was sort of "her thing" in the workplace, so maybe she didn't want anyone else possibly coming along and stealing her "role" in that regard.

Anyway, would you say that the stitch pattern used in this blanket would be a good one for a beginner? If I'm going to learn, I would like to actually make something, and not just create a long "snake" of stitches. I can knit, but so far crochet hasn't been something I've tackled head on. I do have a number of crochet hooks in all sizes, and of course, an enormous yarn stash.

Beautiful. I love how you mixed all the different colors together. I use to crochet a lot of baby blankets but never a full size one. I first learned to knit at 10 YO then later in my teens I learned how to crochet. I liked crocheting more because it seemed to go faster and no dropped stitches.

Ocotillo, this pattern is easy and I'd say it'd make a good 2nd project for a beginner. But for first timers, I usually recommend doing granny squares first as they are much easier to learn to read your stitches, which is key when crocheting. You need to be able to recognize which stitches are which in what you've already done so you know where to put your hook for the next stitch.

But there are so many wonderful videos on you tube to learn. And what's good about that is that you can repeat them as often as you need to, or go as slowly as you want.

Hi Annie, I belong to a group which makes blankets, clothing and toys for refugee children. Could you please post a link to the pattern? I'm always looking for blanket patterns that are a little less open weave than most crochet blankets tend to be, as these blankets are often the only thing between the children and the snow.

Colleen, I'm working on a corner to corner one now and that weave is even denser, but it's a quick and easy pattern. Have you tried that one?

That is beautiful, Annie. Is there a recommended size for the Project Linus blankets? What size do you make them? Almost a year ago I started crocheting hats for Preemie babies with my leftover yarn. Got about 7 or 8 made when the Pandemic hit. I need to check with the hospital to see if they have any idea when they may be able to accept donations again. Lately I've been making some hats to donate to the homeless. It's a another pretty good way to use up leftover yarn as well as learn some new stitches.

Our local chapter collects from baby to twin size. But they do not allow anything made with wool due to potential allergies. So check with your local chapter for specific needs.

So impressive, Annie! I would never guess it was from leftovers and with so many people in need today, it makes me feel good to read about people using their talents for the good of ones not so fortunate. I would love to be able to crochet, but am afraid no two stitches would be the same!

Rusty, this was another one I did in the V stitch. By using 3 colors, it puts the right color yarn were you need it next so you can just carry the yarns up the sides and not do all the cutting and knotting as in the multi-color.

lizbeth, you won't know how well you can crochet until you try. Don't let your fears stand in your way. Give it a go! All it takes is a little yarn and a hook, some patience and practice.

elunia, your daughter has a real skill for this. It will bring her a lifetime of enjoyment. The sweater is very nice. Love the Bern!

Already looking at beanie patterns. Granddaughter turns 13 today and loves beanies. I am left handed, may try to crochet right handed so I can teach her also. I am a very dominant left so will see if my brain can switch it up. Thanks Annie. Have a quilt to finish today. Have lots of yarn and a few crochet needles. Will look tonight for supplies in my “knitting room”. May have to change name of room. Will see if this works for me. Certainly giving it a try.

My mother used to crochet for hours on end. She loved it and always made such lovely blankets to give to others. She rarely kept a single one. I wished I had learned to crochet but I believe it takes far more patience than I have.
