dark blue kitchen island, trendy or timeless?

I’m having a hard time deciding in our new home what color island, light wood floors, white kitchen cabinets, white(ish) quartz counter. I love the look of a navy or dark blue kitchen island but concerned i may regret it in 4-5 years.

"Navy" will never be timeless. It's a current color trend. Painted cabinets is a trend, mixing colors is a current trend. Wood grain/white those are the only "timeless" options. How long will it last, will you be sick of it only you know you. Do you tire of things quickly? One rule of thumb I was told in decorating--the farther "out there"/different/unusual your choice the quicker it will be tired.

Opinion is subjective. What might be considered 'timeless' is subjective.

Some deem crittall style windows as trendy, but they have been used for well over 100 years,,,

I would give more consideration to how the chosen colour works alongside your other fixed finishes, key furnishings and available light in the space.

Some people with all white kitchens, (many thought would be the most timeless option of all ) find they actually become quite wearing on the eyes through lack of contrast. Finding no obvious place to settle, eyes end up constantly roving the space. Not so soothing.

As mentioned above, natural materials can definitely have a timeless quality because they have been around for so long, but how they are used can become dated just as much as the use of more contemporary materials.

Near neutral colours can be more versatile as they can be paired with many more options. But again, without design thought to variety and layering texture and tone that can become bland - fast.

So if you already have certain materials chosen, flooring, tile, etc let them direct the next colour choices to either harmonise or contrast to suit your own aesthetic pleasure.

Navy blue is so timeless to me, I've wanted it for 10 years, got nervous 5 years ago when we did our last kitchen and went with a trendy light gray island, almost instantly regretted it. But this time when we renovated our current kitchen we did navy blue and white cabinets. Deep rich colors will never be trendy, they are historical and timeless in my opinion.

Who cares if it is timeless or not. If you like it do it, your kitchen, your dollars, do what you like.

You can always spend 5K in 10 years time to have it repainted to the then hot color of school bus yellow. Not kidding. Yellow kitchens are on the horizon.

I have a blue island and love it. Mine is BM Newburyport Blue. Not super dark. That being said, you can always paint it again. That is what I like about paint over stained wood. Also, I disagree that wood is timeless. To me, wood finishes go in and out and really date themselves. I say, go for it.

The style of the kitchen should work with the rest of the house. If you do that, then it won’t look trendy in 20 years. Additionally you should choose colors you have always loved. If you loved them 10 years ago, you’ll love them ten years from now.

Whether it's trendy and whether you will regret it are really two different questions. Yes, white perimeters with dark blue islands are trendy. Ten years ago NO ONE did them. Now it seems like 3/4 of the new kitchens posted here have them. That is undeniably a trend.

Will you regret it? I tend to think that people with open floor plans may come to regret navy islands, because it will drive the bus of their design choices in a huge portion of their house even after they want to say goodbye to navy and embrace the next trend, at least the ones who are trend-aware and trend-driven. As someone rightly pointed out, though, those people can always paint the island a different color later. Some who really love blue may be thrilled with the same kitchen for decades. People with self-contained kitchens don't have to worry about how the navy island affects the decor in the rest of the house and will probably (on average) be happy with the look for longer.

To the OP - a blue island has indeed been popular for the last few years, but it is pretty, and is not difficult to coordinate with other elements in the kitchen. A characteristic of trends that are more short-lived are that they make it hard to create a cohesive look kitchen. Examples are thin multi-color pencil tiles for backsplash, driftwood-gray wood floors, and Quartz counters with veins that look like tree roots. But a navy island does not have that issue. If you love it, get it.

I like the look, but I like a lot of different looks and a lot of different colors, but the real question is what are the colors that you consistently are drawn to? What colors make your heart sing?

If you look in your closet and your wall art and your dishes and jewelry and bedding what colors do you consistently buy?

Here is a collection of some of the things I own and love . . .

I may like the look of a navy and white kitchen, but does navy make my heart sing? Nope. It is a pretty combination and I can appreciate the beauty and simplicity of the look, but it isn't going to bring me joy every time I walk into the room.

I can see these kitchen bringing me joy year after yea

I think that your kitchen should inspire you and make sense with your home. If that for you is safe choices, then do that. If you crave something different that the rest of your neighbors, then go with that. I wish I was timeless...I think that I need a facelift ;) and maybe a new paint job, which is what most kitchens will need at some point also. Door styles change, lighting for sure gets dated etc...it's more than just colors that tell when most kitchens were built.

I'm guessing most everything is "trendy" and new at some point and can become passe given enough time. My best advice is to choose a color that YOU like - not one that is simply on trend. Good luck!
