Paint cabinets or paint walls?

How can I update my kitchen - would you suggest painting cherry cabinets a whitish color or paint the walls a white beige? It appears the tan is not working well and haven’t liked it since being repainted and now more so than ever. Would white walls make a nice change? Trying to make changes that won’t break the bank but dealing with the terra-cotta floors and cherry cabinets is making a change more challenging! Thanks in advance for the help!

I would bring that green into your living room with accessories.

The goal is to replace the sofa, rug and ottoman. In the meantime I’m not sure the real will work on this couch.

What color sofa are you thinking of getting?

Those floors are tricky to work with for sure. I think this tile for your backsplash has the potential to be very pretty in your space. It is called Avaricon 8x8 ceramic tile and is sold thru Wayfair. It has the tiniest hint of your green and may coordinate with your drapes. I love it with the wood though, I would do rows of three tiles like they did in this photo so you would get 3 rows of the

reddish flowers, center one tile in the middle of your backsplash and then cut above and below for the bottom and top rows. Extra cuts would go below the microwave. Each box would cover about 5 feet with one tile to spare. It is a lot of cuts but worth it for how nicely it could coordinate with your colors. Sherwin Williams Alabaster white could work, and maybe a simple terra cotta check above your windows as a valance if the drapes don't coordinate.

Colleen, I don’t have advice for you but rather a question. What color of paint is on the walls of the lovely room you posted? The photo with the couch, clock, and wood blinds? I’m looking for a subtle green and I love how your room looks! You did a great job!!

Colleen I love the window treatments you have in your living room. Would you mind telling me about them?

    Hi Lizzie,
Thank you. They are silhouettes. I think they are 2” slats.

Thank you Colleen. They are very attractive.

@Blessedwith5, the color is SW sea salt. Thank you! I love it too. Now why couldn’t I pull that off in kitchen and living room :(

Lizzie the other curtains are from Ballard’s

Amanda, sofa will be a neutral light off white beige

Sounds like a good choice. It will be easy to accessorize.

Colleen, do you have the latest Ballard catalog? I just received one a few days ago. Some really nice items. Seems to be your preferred style.

Yes, I love Ballards. I’ll be checking it out again. I need to find my new paint color for the kitchen before I do another room. I’m going to grab some swatches soon after this snow storm all’s me to see if I can find a lighter creme color. Thank you!!!!!!

Lighting - looking for help with picking island lighting and perhaps removing fan and adding a chandelier type over the table.

I wouldn't call the curtains mint, though I'm not there to see - but seems more seafoam or robin's egg color... sort of classic looking.

Everdebz, that makes me feel better. I am hoping when I select a new paint color (still working on) I will see a different color in the fabric.

    It’s a little more seafoam/different than what’s showing online

@Beth H: thank you so much for all the advise. I have gone back numerous times to your comments and appreciate the great advice. Hoping to get to paint store today for samples. Perhaps Feather down!!! Thanks again!

Those drapes are gorgeous, Colleen. Are they from Ballard?

Do you have a separate dining room in addition to this area?

I think changing the wall color will help.

Beautiful room. Your cabinets look like good quality. Didn't read the 131 comments to see if anyone suggested this but what about leaving the cabinets and changing the backsplash, counters and appliances?

Merry lawn, that’s what most of us are suggesting.

While it would be a big cost, it would also certainly make a huge change. The plus is it's not a huge space. The cabinets are really nice! Good luck!

Colleen, I found this on the Ballard website. More streamlined than your current island lighting. I honestly don’t think your current lighting is bad... a little too ornate for current trends maybe. I would paint and see how you feel about it.

I have only participated here once before I think . Hope it is ok that I do now . IMHO there is far too much beige (taupe) or whatever you want to call it in your room. That color does not enhance the richness of your cupboard .

It is a flat color ( I don't mean flat paint I mean a flat color ) there is no joy in this color , no personality. I believe I am seeing a beighish color tile floor. The first thing I would do is remove that floor and brighten up the the room with something much brighter. Yes, a big job but your room is pulled down due to that color . It looks dull, and helps make the room look small . Your cupboards are lovely and I just cringe when I hear people say "Paint! Paint! Paint! those cupboards . You could perhaps stencil something on the pantry doors and match with the small cupboard above the fridge . You could use a vinyl that peels off that way it doesnt hurt the wood.

If you want to brighten the rest up change the hardware ( as mentioned in a post above ) Then you can paint the walls and bring in a color that brings you joy ! Today everything is done in white , beige tones or greys . Boring !!!!! Everyone is afraid to commit to color , yet being that we see in color , why waste that attribute to live in a beige and/or grey world . Live dangerously . It is only paint and if you decide you don't want it anymore you can change it .

Again these thoughts are just my humble opinion

If it were my kitchen, I would start by getting new appliances in stainless. steel. You will get an immediate update/upgrade to your kitchen. I think that’s where I would put my money first.....

Right now it’s paint and lighting, as the high end changes will be done in due time. But a big YES for stainless.

Signet, thank you for the input!!! The floors are 21 years old and don’t see us doing them over just yet. Sadly, they are staying. They are more of a neutral Terracotta color. The walls are Manchester tan. I was actually looking at a neutral paint due to all the colors in the floor, curtains and cabinet colors. Lord I wish I could pick the best color and run with it :)

Amanda, this is it. No other dining space. My home is a small cape.

    Beth, yes from Ballard’s!

Your floors are classic terracotta. I see no reason to replace them. Since this is your main dining area, you can make it a little more “fancy”, i. e. your more formal draperies....

Update: 4000K bulbs installed. I’m adjusting to bright lights but now see how it changes everything. Now I see the paint is a problem more so! Thoughts? Paint the kitchen, warm white?

Does the paint look green to you!

    Hi
I would try getting a sample of BM pale oak. It’s looks nice with cherry but you would have to test in your lighting. Also for your backsplash I would try picking the lightest color from you counter (it looks like there is light tones mixed in there) and try doing a simple subway tile backsplash. New lighting if possible and maybe remove the clock and change barstools. 😊

Thanks, I’ll check out that paint color! I’m not changing the backsplash just yet and will be doing a few changes in the future, stainless, perhaps white counters and yes a new backsplash. The clock is staying as it’s something I love unless there is something else that can make an impact, I’d consider it.

I know that some pros' answer to any color issue is to change the light bulbs to 4000K LEDs, but to my eye they make the room look way too bright and garish. Like an operating room. And yes, the wall color looks more green now than with the original lighting. It could also make your complexion look green as well. JMHO.

Diana! I do agree with you! I’m struggling with all my decisions lately and feel this is an operating room. I need the LEDs in the kitchen area as the undercounted lighting isn’t working and need an electrician. Not happening right now. I guess I can’t use both warm and LED together in the room?

I just want to love this room again and feel since I added the curtains, I have opened up a can of worms and can’t find what will work any longer! Ugh

You have a lovely home and it will come together.

Would adding these shades to my panels make a positive difference? Would they enhance and warm the space?

Those panels are beautiful. You need nothing else, imho.

I would try those panels in there. It may help you to decide which paint color to try. As for a warm white, I have SW Antique white in my house and I am not sure that is the answer. (I am not a pro.). Maybe a white with a slightly different undertone will work. Maybe BM Swiss Coffee is closer to the white I would use. Some whites will read too yellow. If you bring home the Whites collection from BM or SW, it will definitely help. Some of the pros here can probably make strong suggestions.
And you may get used to the brighter bulbs sooner rather than later. I think they look much better.....

Colleen, you're getting so much conflicting advice and you're still not happy. Have you considered hiring a decorator to help you? Someone who can visit you in the space and help you pull it all together? That may be more productive than trying to crowd-source the answer.

Thank you Diana! That could be an option at this point. I did add the bright bulbs in my LR this morning and feel there is more flow now from LR into the kitchen and now not seeing yellow in the lighting in one room and white lights in adjoining room. I will see how it looks tonight ;). Im heading out this weekend for paint swatches. It’s the paint that is in my way. I’ll shoot for whitish creme (unless you have another color suggestion). Thank you for your help!

the best way to take your eye away from the wood cabinets is to redirect it..... IMO a bit of sparkle in the backsplash would liven up the darkness. reflective surfaces add light and interest...think glass, mirror, pearl, stainless. there are wonderful mosaics combining some or all of these. ideally you would already have under cabinet lighting to highlight your counter and splash, but if not, please consider it.

as Patricia stated, the colour of your lighting is very important. is it time perhaps, to change out your light fixtures?

Colleen, I already gave you my opinion way back on the paint color, but you didn't care for it (dark and dramatic). I think anything else is just going to look meh. But it's your house, and you seem to be on a merry-go-round.

Kathleen, she already changed all the bulbs to 4000K LEDs. Changing the fixtures doesn't change the color of the lighting.

Diana, true! You did suggest dark. I am still working out the paint colors and the darker colors are being considered. The problem is coordinating with the new fabric which is why I was leaning neutral. Only being able to research my options on the weekends, leaves me on my hunt this weekend for the right color. Thanks so much!
