Alternative Sink Placement?

last modified: 5 years ago

Toying with some floorplan options for a new build, we found one we like. But, the kitchen has one of my biggest pet peeves - the sink in the island (I prefer NOTHING - no stove top, no sink, etc - on the island). BUT, I am not seeing an alternative placement for the sink/dishwasher.

My ONLY thought is 1) NOT doing the stacked double oven and instead moving the (smaller) fridge to that spot (with a microwave just to the left of it); and 2) putting the sink/dishwasher along the wall the fridge was moved from (to the right of the pantry door, when facing it). My biggest hang-up with that idea is that someone standing at the sink will be blocking the "flow" from the mudroom area.

I have a terrible eye for these things, so would love alternative ideas (I know I can do a two tier island to kind of "hide" the sink - but that's a last resort - had that set-up in my last house, and don't care for it much)!

Post a to scale floor pln of the space all measurements clearly marked the size of the appliances iif they are going to be used windows doorways marked and the plumbing if it can’t be moved. I never like a sink directly across from a cooking appliance and for sure not in this pic since you not only have the sink right across from the cooktop but in fact it is the prep sink too. That pantry is not convienent for unloading groceries for sure The best place for the fridge is next to the great room or the DR. I assume this is a renovation ???

No, this will be a new build (I edited the comment to note such). So, it's somewhat carte blanche - but the plan does entail a full, finished basement - so not wanting to go crazy with modifications (moving out walls, etc) to the existing floorplan. I also don't want to lose the space for the "wine cooler" and "bar area" that is currently next to the great room (will happily move it, but definitely wanting to keep that)!

Not exactly sure if this would work without actual measurements, but what if you pushed the pantry opening all the way to the end where the wine cooler is now. Then put a sink on that countertop run between the fridge and the pantry opening. There might not be enough room though to give yourself enough clearance on each side of the sink. You could put an under counter wine cooler in the island.

Both choices the entry from the mudroom will be blocked--by the open fridge door or by the person at the sink. The fridge would be more convenient by the dining room but then you are crisscrossing the cooking area unless you put a prep sink on the island. Unless you are willing to do that, I don't think this is the plan for you. I agree that the pantry is inconvenient, would be better somehow accessible from the garage entry area.

A sink in the island works best for workflow, but since you don't like that:

Shift the pantry entry all the way to the right (and get rid of the tunnel to it). Put the fridge just to the left of the pantry doorway. Countertop to the left of that (dishwasher under), then sink and more countertop. Wine fridge can go in the island.

If you rearrange the back entry, you could put the fridge on the long wall and block the view into the bathroom from the great room. That would give you the option to make the island longer, with more open space for prep. I put a MW drawer and wine chiller on the end, both facing the traffic aisle. Laundry and pantry would each be a bit smaller, but still plenty of space for their functions. There might even be space for a small coffee center to the left of the pantry door, with storage for a few wineglasses.
