In the first picture you posted, the colour looks fine. In the second it seems to be a different colour completely and too turquoisey for my taste on a large sized couch.

The same colour on the cushion is very pretty. I fear it might be a colour best left for accents, not the main event.

I’m no expert, at all, my first reaction is it is out of place with your other selections. I love blue, if you want blue, seems like you’d have to change up the rug and wall colors. Do you have a picture of the classic grey with your selections?

Sorry but in akids space unless these are washable slipcovers they will look gross in no time . Get leather a much better choice for a well used space and I would do navy leather .BTW any color but gray ot beige.

Color preferences vary. What is most important is that you like it.

It does seem to vary between the first and second picture because of the lighting and monitor variations.

Non-neutral colors, like this, seem to be a trend on sofas and sectionals. I personally like the color and would be happy with it.

I also like the gold color alone. I don't think I would use it with the blue/gray sectional though. I know blues and yellows can look lovely together, but this blue and gold combination seems off to me. I can't tell you exactly why. It might be combining with the brown and gold and blue isn't quite right.

@mvcanada the color does shift to pick up more turquoise once combined with blue accents. I worry that youre right and it might go really blue when it’s on a large sectional.

@alwayscold the wall color is BM Ballet White so it’s pretty neutral but I worry that the sectional fabric really pulls in blue when it’s on a larger swatch.

We have a sectional in a similar color in our family room. I love it and will probably always love it. But I have always loved blue. Not a fan of the rug sample, but I really like everything else.

@Patricia Colwell Consulting theres an option to do crypton. I don’t want to do leather, I live in the South, leather will get gross in the summer. And navy leather will be too dark, it’s a smaller bonus room with a sloped ceiling above the garage. We did gray for our last sectional and it held up surprisingly well but I’m so tired of gray. Any other color suggestions?

@rrah it’s a big investment ($4k), I’m worried I won’t like it when it’s on a large sectional and ottoman because it will look too blue. Seems like neutral will probably be best. Back to the store I go....

@simplechoices can you share a photo by any chance? What would you recommend for a rug? Something more neutral? I’m torn, I like blue but my mom made the point that i can always get blue accent pillows and then switch them out if I get tired of blue but I can’t switch out the sectional without a significant expense.

The pictures make it look gray when it's really not. We painted a year before we bought the sectional. I will probably repaint at some point. I don't mind our rug, but it's too small for the space, so I am looking for something faded, but with actually more pattern, that incorporates some of the pillow colors and art colors.

For you area rug, on screen it just looks like a too creamy background. I actually like a pattern, just the hue seem off. I find a lot of area rugs cream backgrounds are too yellow. It could be my screen.

Personally, I always start with my rug which then, in turn, drives every other choice. Find a well made rug you love that is the appropriate size and go from there.

@simplechoices thats a lovely grayish blue. okay, I think you’ve actually convinced me that the fabric I was looking at is too turquoise. I’ll go back today and look at more neutral grayish options. Thanks!

@jhoff86 Yes my sectional is a greyed-blue, but it does look bluer in person. I was actually hoping to convince you to use your fabric selection as it doesn't look overtly loud or turquoise on my screen. But that's the thing with digital renderings, they are never true enough. At least you got some clarity. But I would encourage you to not go too safe or too gray.

The color reminds me of jeans. Nothing weird about jeans in my book, as so much goes with it it's almost a neutral..and can be very cool in kids'/teens space, And I'd pair with pillows that are less traditional and contain maybe several colors in fabric including blue.

Can you show us a sectional in question? I'd need to know the shape. If you're interested in specific suggestions.

Agree that gold and blue is usually winning, expected combo but seems off in the pictures above. Gold seems a bit overpowering. Maybe it'll look different because it will be just a bit of gold vs a lot of this faded blue, but i'd already do either something more vividly complimentary (reds? oranges?) or stay analogous with shades of blues and whites.

My color choices skew more organic. I hired a consultant for my walls and was given a palate of BM Ballet White, BM Winds Breath, BM Blue Note, BM Classic Gray, BM White Dove, and BM Caldwell Green. she recommended off whites for sectionals and cognac leather (which I’m going to have in my living room). Im scared to do off white though with kids in their game room!

If you are brave, don't match the ottoman. It's a small surface so it would not be overwhelming in a different pattered or solid fabric. But find your area rug before making that decision.

Seeing the sectional-I'd go for a different color too. Jeans would work better on something more minimalistic clean lined-or maybe something small and more fussy, to make a contradiction statement.

And this sectional is not modern, and not small.

So. Either off-white-or richer, darker blue. Or this Cadwell Green, if similar shade exists in fabrics' choice? But I hear you don't want to go too dark-so maybe yes to off white in Crypton? how old are the kids? will it be game room with TV too? Is the room light or dark?

I'd do a different ottoman too-I have an ottoman that doesn't match the sectional but was suggested with it in a store-and I didn't want it then(my DH really loved it so we ended up buying it) and I don't like it 10 years later either. It will always remind me of that store exhibition.. I covered it with a cantha throw for now.

Obviously same ottoman would work fine-just sharing my experience. I like to hunt and gather, gives more interesting look. So I'm with simplechoices here.

I'd look to find a camel-colored couch or a taupe. Both give you the opportunity to use almost any color for accessories. I wouldn't go any lighter. You'll want removable and washable seat covers. I remove them four times a year and wash and dry them. Put them back on and use spray protection to them.

I’ve had two custom couches and occasional chairs made over the years and it’s natural to get cold feet, as it’s expensive and a big commitment. Our first couch was blue and had over 25 years. It never felt dated due to updates to the room: paint color, rug, accessories etc and subsequently didn’t tire of it. Our second couch is cream and with pets, it’s a struggle, so I would avoid a light color for daily use and with children. Grey (or any other color) will only feel classic based on your accessories, not the color of sectional. Suggest as a first priority the quality of construction and fabric, with color choice coming last.

Can’t tell exact color of your fabric, but it is neutral enough to live with for years and can be accessorized in a lot of ways. Accessorizing is key and thought the combination below felt classic, yet modern. To achieve a coherent and up to date look, be sure to bring home lots of items: art, cushions (I wouldn't have made) and rugs (suggest simple, neutral for a modern, casual look)

Agree that as long as you love the color you can make it work under many, many circumstances

(saying it as somebody who has off-white, aubergine, brick red, pink, rich green, blue with print, butter yellow, etc upholstery-no, not in the same room, and not all in one home either-but these are all sofas, or armchairs, or a bed-big pieces. And yes most of them I moved from one house to another one. And managed to introduce colors I avoided before but like more now.

I really love off white, to the point I still hold on to it while frankly needs to get reupholstered, it's my oldest furniture-but it's not like other pieces are much harder to work with. It's a big part of a room of course, upholstery color, but it's still only a part. )

I'd say shape and fabric are more important in defining your room style. Say this sectional leans more transitional and cozy and would look good with pillows and throws.

That's not true for every couch out there-some of them look best very minimally adorned, or not at all.

And so on, and so forth.

If you're sure the room will have a rug-it's a good idea to start with a rug as inspiration, or to have the idea of a possible rug in mind when choosing the color.

@Maureen that photo is really lovely, beautiful what they did with the colors. I got a close up of the couch fabric with more neutral colors (it’s on the right) and now it’s skewing darker. It skewed very light blue with the pillows. Like a color chamelon. I think I should probably just go for something more classic though since it’s a more transitional couch. You’re right that it’s a big purchase so I’m scared it’ll come in and not be exactly how I want it to look. I wish there was a way to see how the fabric looks in a large sample!

Hi, you mentioned that your sectional is going to be from Bassett Furniture...correct? I am familiar with Bassett, they have beautiful furniture and we also have custom furniture from there. It can be very challenging selecting from the over 800 fabric choices! Since this is for a kids game room, I suggest sticking with one of their many textured performance fabrics that are very durable and perfect for high traffic areas like a game room. They also have online tools to envision what the fabric will look like on your sectional. Have you looked at the performance fabrics or tried the online tools? We found it helpful.

If you don't like it, then you don't like it. I don't think anyone here can (or should) try to change your mind.

Colors are rarely inherently "ugly" - it's all about how they relate to the rest of their environment.

@kiffkat Yes, this is Bassett! We are sticking to either Crypton or the performance textured fabric. I didn’t realize they could show me what the couch will look like, I’ll ask for them to show me exactly what it’ll look like in that swatch I selected. They did do a room render, which was great, but it didn’t show the colors.

@User i liked it until I showed it to other people! 😂 Now I’m thinking that i should go with something more neutral though. It looked nice in the store and the sales lady was really praising it but literally everyone I show it to says it looks ugly!

Hi jhoff86, what is the exact name/color of the fabrics you are considering? I went to their website and don’t see anything called Crypton? Also, what is the name color of the performance textured fabric? You can go online yourself and use their tools, you don’t need them to do it. I just tried it out, and although the online renderings aren’t as good as they use to be, you may still find it helpful.

Thanks everyone. Decided to go with this color scheme. Thats going to be color of the sectional, hopefully the fabric holds up, they told me it can survive water and bleach, but I also did the 5 year fabric protection. The fun fabric is the ottoman. Brings in the deep blue from my husbands office per our color consultant, so theres some cohesiveness happening in the house.

I was so hoping you'll use this fun fabric! Was afraid to suggest for an ottoman, but was hoping for at least a pillow:) I love it.

@kiffkat i dont know if the crypton is only available in store? the color was bone. I also purchased the Mari leather recliners from them and they’re nowhere online. 🤔

Thanks guys! I’m feeling so much better now about my decision. I’m indecisive about color so I think accent colors via pillows is best for someone like me, that way I can change it up to suit my mood.
