I would not have an upholstered bed, myself; due to cats and other things, I don’t think it would last long. Also a platform bed is not necessarily low to the ground. The most comfort comes from a well supported mattress base. Get what you like.

We have an upholstered bed (tufted) and I love it. Honestly it will probably be out of style/we would get tired of it before it gets gross, but I suppose that depends on how you sleep and what you do in your bedroom. My head doesn't touch my headboard because I sleep with my head on a pillow. I also don't eat, drink, smoke, etc. in my bed. If you do, maybe an upholstered bed isn't for you. But my upholstered couch gets way more use/dirt and is fine, so I don't know why a bed would be any different.

Our bed requires a box spring, but we got a low profile metal foundation from amazon which sits below the side rails and isn't visible, which we love. I also love the lower height. I think tall beds make rooms look small. You buy your nightstand based on the height of your mattress, so choose your bed, box spring (if required) and mattress size before you pick your nightstands. The wing back of most beds won't impair reaching onto your nightstand, since your shoulders should be sufficiently far from the wings...but it seems like your head is up pretty high when you sleep so maybe this would be an issue for you.

The bed you buy should already have sufficient support with it as far as legs go. The only question will be whether you need to buy a box spring/foundation or not.

Also, make sure you note how high the headboard sits and make sure your box spring + mattress is thick enough to cover the gap.
