Deck question. ASAP

Help houzzers, my hubby and I are having this deck built on our house and apparently there was a misunderstanding between him and I and want to know if I should let it go?

The deck is around our chimney so I suggested a 'bump out' of the equivalent space on the front end of the deck.
I 'assumed' it would be angled like pic #2 but my hubby told builder #1.

Let it be? Or ask to change to #2? (It would be for design purposes mainly as I don't think the grill will fit there.)

HI -- I don't think I would have done either -- no bump out -- just have the deck straight across -- more usable that way . Maybe that would be better for both of you and easier and cheaper that way. There problem solved !

You'll like #1 just as well and it will save you a little money too. Stylistically, it repeats the chimney shape and makes sense.

Really? Ok. That makes me feel better. I was concerned that rectangle would look too harsh or something. This will make my husband happy ;)

Hi luckyjill......I agree that number 1 will suit your needs better, although the 45 clipped angles look nice, they detract when you need to fit a grill or lounger in that space. I agree with Dar.

If you really want the angled piece it could be added to option #1 relatively inexpensively.

Thank you guys for your input! #1 it is.

Now I will need to figure out what to do with that little space.. I am thinking built-in bench... Off to search pictures ;)

Around here chimney bump outs or doghouse's as the called in our trade are usually 2' in projection and 5' wide. If your goona use this for your grill, make sure you measure the grill to make sure it fits. If you use the rectangular bump out, you have to remember your loosing around 11' in width in the railing. With that being said, a 5' width area becomes 4' 1". Most grills are 5-6' wide. Hope that helps.....Dave

I really like the 45 angle cut one with the bench. :( The workers just put the poles up yesterday for the rectangle version. Oh well. I also think it is not size of your recommended size for doghouses.

You will still need the posts at that location, but they can fill the area with a 45 degree piece of lumber and add 2 more posts on the end of the angle for railing. Wouldn't cost you much to change things right now. If thats what you really want.

Here is how far along they are. I am getting used to it. I am afraid to ruffle any feathers as these workers are VERY slow.

Maybe a bench or deck box could fit in there.. 53x26

What material did you use, i see its a groove and groove product....is it a composite or a vinyl material?

It is composite decking . Grey color. Will have white vinyl railings.

I would recommend not doing a bumpout. If you don't like the rectangle (less the chimney cutout, I would curve it from corner to corner on the side opposite the chimney.

Make Sure That You Pull The Grill Out 12" or so b4 you cook anything. Having it that close to the railings when that weber gets hot, will certainly warp the rails.
