They don't get gross.

I have never had one in my home, but there were two of these at a place I worked for 13 years. This was a food-related business, and there was a lot of food trash. Never gross. In fact, I don't ever remember a serious mess at the rim. Of course if there was anything large to throw away, we would simply slide the trash bin out and dump it directly in.

I have never seen one in a home in person, but it is near the top of my wish-list for the kitchen we are currently planning. The cost is minimal, but they are so convenient and help keep people out of the workspace.

I wanted one, but I got talked out if it. But I bet you could figure out how to add a stainless steel insert that could be removed and washed in the dishwasher every once in a while to keep the area clean.

I did find a site that had a stainless steel insert option. I will have to see if I actually saved it.
So this kitchen is actually in my guest house that will be listed as an Airbnb. One of my little marketing things is that the space has interesting products or options that people want to experience in person. A sleep number bed, a Lovesac sofa, a towel warmer in the bathroom, a big green egg grill, etc. It won’t be in constant use, as my area is a big weekend destination.

Here's one from RAS. Maybe just use the outer rings and lid and put a bigger can beneath.
