Backsplash selection help

last modified: 5 years ago

Just had new white Dallas countertops installed and need to decide on a tile backsplash. have no clue what to do. Thought we were going to like the ones in the photos before counters were installed but not loving them looking next to them. The herringbone and the 3x5 subway tiles are the favorites so far

do either of these look good? Would a colorful glass mosaic be a good option or would that be too busy with the tops?

any other suggestions?

Yea, you need something solid against that countertop. You could do a whisper-soft color, or pull out one of the light tones in the counter.

Echoing what has previously been stated on similar posts- there can only be one star, either the countertop or the backsplash. Busy countertops pair best with a simple backsplash. Competing surfaces don’t play well together. As @Carrie B said....

Dallas White is also known as River White (and Kashmir White). if you google image river white kitchens, you'll see a lot of inspiration pics.

    Here are some

this is a single color iridescent white random linear bar mosaic. it actually looks nice. don't confuse it w/those other bar mosaic tiles.

this has your 3x6 carrara marble tiles

    If you want a marble, I'd go w/something larger. say a 2x8, 3x9, 3x12,2x10, etc. and I'd pick a whiter marble.

if you want some color, stay w/the cooler colors like soft blues or greens, even grays.

if you want the herringbone design, then pick a solid color w/a larger tile

The same thing happened to me. I fell in love with a tile, it was perfect...until my tops went down and they changed just a bit...and the undertone of the tile no longer worked. I have busy counters, I chose a solid white herringbone with light gray grout. It really is a matter of opinion, my kitchen makes me SO happy, but I don't think that anyone in my neighborhood would have made the same choices. Know yourself and trust your eye.

part II. here, I've done some photoshops for you. see if you like any of them.

In the interim, go over to Tilebar and look at Thunder

it's a glazed brick subway w/cooler blue tones. you get 5 samples for $5

you might also look at HD online or Wayfair under "Ivy Hill" tile. they carry a lot of the same tiles that Tilebar does

    like this Portmore

    Montauk Gin

    Newport in white

    Cadenza, Salt Cellar.

Tilebar. nabi Harlequin in natal white. look at this one. i have a sample of it.

Thanks all. We bought some more and like these options the best. The one is a bright white and the other is a light gray (looks darker in the picture then life)

also considering a pattern with these tiles cut apart. White white gray throughout. Thoughts?

I don't love the blue-ish cast on the glass parts of the tiles that you most recently posted. I feel like it fights with the creaminess of your counter.

    I'm liking the second one.

i don’t think they look blue in person maybe it was the camera. Try this one it looks more true to life

There’s also a more cream colored glass (far left)

Do you see how you have daylight-temperature lights under the cabinets, and the yellowish pink lights in your ceiling lights?

Look at the diff tones. You don't want the warmer bulbs in your ceiling (or whatever lights you have) because it makes your granite look yellow/pink/taupe. change out the bulbs to a 4000K.

as for the tile, if you like it w/that design, that's all that matters. if you're asking for an opinion, it's big NO from me. Also, white glass tile once installed, will take on a minty green appearance.

I gave you at least 15 other tile options in my previous TWO comments. you didn't like any of them?

You need to go simple. Don’t mix two colors on your backsplash. Pick a solid color and use an interesting layout. You are taking away from your beautiful countertop by making a jigsaw out of the backsplash. Glass tiles are tricky since they do chant color after they’re installed.

I agree, that backsplash is not good Josh! Beth has some great choices, pick any of those.

I agree with the others here. Don’t use that glass tile; it’s not working here. It’s fighting with the granite.
Your countertop is the statement piece. Let it be the star, and your whole kitchen will come together.
    Use one of Beth’s suggestions.

So no glass at all or just not the combo? Plain white glass subway tile be ok?

You are trying to use two colors, and like the first ones, it is way too busy looking for your counter. I think the white on these glass ones, appears cold and too white for your countertops. Beth is right, change out those ceiling light bulbs, and then try again. They are contributing to you having problems finding the correct tile. Find a nice simple tile. You seem to be trying to make a statement with your backsplash, which ends up being too much for your countertops. Let the countertop be the star and simplify the backsplash. Or finish up the rest of your kitchen, if you still have more to do, and just wait on the backsplash for a month or two. Give yourself some breathing space, and time to think about it, and time to bring home more samples and look at them for a few days. That backsplash doesnt have to go on right now, it can wait a bit. Redoing a kitchen is stressful. Take a stress break.

Thanks for your messages about backsplash and lighting

We are going to replace the overhead can lights with 4000k as you suggested. What I wondered if you had advice on was the watts/lumens? There are 5 can lights over the kitchen and 2 pendants over the island.

The ceilings are 9 ft high

Looks like 650, 700, 1200 lumens are the options available at Lowe’s.

Josh, I sent you a message regarding the lighting.

White glass tiles appear very cool and 'minty' looking once up on the wall. I don't know how many other ways I can say it. If you want glass, go w/a gray color (or some other color) that matches the cabs and the granite.

I'll ask you again, I posted at least 15 backsplash choices. Did you like any of them?

I appreciate the tile suggestions but not in lob love with any of them. I’m struggling as I don’t like whites in person as much as I thought I would. I think we need something warmer like a grayish. Also the flatness of ceramic doesn’t seem to go with the depth in the counters.

right now the grey glass is my favorite but not set on it yet. I see them in the store and think it looks great and get it home and it changes. Maybe the lightning will help. Regardless i don’t think I can go with solid white personally

    thanks again

All of those white tiles, even a subway, and you don't like any of them? what is the reason? Just curious since they are all so different. you're picking a simple glass subway in two colors and want to blend them. You already have a busy looking granite, so doing something like that w/the two colors, may not be the best choice.

I gave you many shapes, patterns, even a few colors, but what is it you don't like?

Since the white is going to be too cool looking, that leaves grays or darker charcoals or blacks.

Gray wouldn't be my first choice, but here are some options:

If you like the glass, take a look over here

    https://discountglasstilestore.com/glass-tile/

be careful w/the gray selections. because of the warmer brown cabinet color, you don't want a cool blue/gray glass.

For example, this one is the bliss/elements in smoke.

grab some samples and see how the color works

    https://discountglasstilestore.com/bliss-glass-elements-collection/

but they have a ton of other colors you may like.

    Mist is also nice

how about a 2x12 glass subway in Silver

    https://discountglasstilestore.com/2-x-12-silver-rush-glass-subway-series-clearance-7-29-per-square-foot/

Atlantic series carries this Smoke color too (can't get a photo to load)

    https://discountglasstilestore.com/atlantic-series/

Or, they have this warmer gray tile in a smaller size

    https://discountglasstilestore.com/2x6-glass-subway-series-light-gray-special-price-7-49-sq-ft/

what about this black herringbone? you like this?

Not liking the grey with your cabinet color, sorry. . The common thread in all the answers is to keep it simple ( no busy pattern and or multi colors) because of the already busy countertops. Curious what your floors are, it does play into the choice

    Thoughts?

    last modified: 5 years ago

meh. I don't care for the 2x4 tile size.

tell me, how does your 2nd picture, the white option, differ that much from the options I showed you?

Are you just drawn to a subway tile laid in a standard brick-set pattern?

if you like a plain subway tile, there are other layouts.

Thanks for the feedback again. I can’t buy online because we’ve been through over 25 different styles from Lowe’s and menards that we thought we liked until got them home so has to be something easy to return.

these 3 are the favorites so far. Do any of these look ok?

I agree, no glass, solid colour subway tile, otherwise it reads TOO busy. Good luck!

I like the far right one. It has some interest, but not too busy for countertop. Seems like a good color, too.

Another vote for the one to the right. Is it two different types of tiles? Some look flat and others look beveled. That grey seems to work but only you can see them in person.

In your latest pic, the color of the right is nice, but it looks like it has three different tile patterns which looks weird.

    this one

yes the far right has 4 different profiles of tile all with the same color and finish

You seem to want something a bit unique. So, go with the one you just posted.

Onky you can know if the color is right. We can get absence but monitors can view differently.

Can you get that color in just the beveled version? I think it will add depth to the backsplash. And it’s not white.

I would like it all the same but can’t find it like that. My wife likes the different shapes

Not a fan of the different profiles. At all. It looks like a bunch of sample tiles put together in a backsplash,to me. I’d say: pick one.
But it’s YOUR kitchen; get whatever makes you happy.

I vote for the one on the right with the 4 different profiles. !

One more choice before going with the other one. How about the vertical gray glass?

    last modified: 5 years ago

    the last one looks good.

Get a Schluter Jolly for the edges. (if you need them)

make sure to use a blade meant for glass tiles (or it will chip),

if you don't use the diamond blade, the glass edge will look like this

A couple of things before final decisions that I think will help:

    1. Clear everything off the counter
    2. Take your top contenders, one at a time and put several up like they will be (double overed on the back) to hold it in place ( or at the top under the cabinet) so you can't see the tape.
    3. Step back to get the full visual
    4. Capture the picture as you have been up close but with counter and cabinets in frame
    5. Capture the full visual to share that includes the floor

samples of 4 and 5 below. I think this will help not only for those of us here but for you two as well.

Lisa, if you scroll up, he's already done that. We've gone around the block w/diff choices already.

One problem with the vertical gray. Not sure how to handle that on the island with raised bar. One tile vertically takes up most the space. Do we switch to horizontal here or have each piece cut with a different offset? Or rule out vertical because of this

    last modified: 5 years ago

just run them all vertical in that spot,,

on this pic the cut the tiles in half and did that all the way across. you could do either

if you have any left over granite, cut a piece to fit behind that spot.

the other option is to find individual tiles in a larger size and stack them like this for your splash.

One more classic white subway but this time beveled. And it’s growing on me

    last modified: 5 years ago

that's nice too. I like it better than the gray glass.

are you doing the tiling? if so, be very careful when grouting those bevel tiles. you have to remove all the grout except the tiny joint space. a lot of people leave too much grout behind between the bevels

We are hiring a custom home builder/remodeling company to do it

what color grout would you recommend? White? light gray with this lines?

for which one? the white or the gray glass?

    these are Mapei grout colors.

I like Warm Gray. it would look nice w/the white tiles, or even the gray glass

Frost has a cooler, silver tone to it, and Avalanche is the brightest white on the market

Thanks we were thinking mapei warm gray with the white be beveled tiles

I think that will look perfect w/your warmer wood tones.

I did the Warm Gray w/my white tile in the shower
