That's what I thought - cover until you replant. I was concerned that I should wait for bloom before replanting.

how deep is your freeze .. and consequently your heave ...

ive never grown these things.. but it seems they should have been panted deep enough that they shouldnt have heaved...

thats why i mention tree rats ...

the only thing i usually see heaved is the tiny spring ephemera bulbs ... that are only an inch down or so.. crocus ... etc ... and not often even those???

Thanks Ken, I just planted some last fall and was wondering the same thing or Did I plant these too deep??? Guess not/hope not.

The ground is workable now Ken. We have an early thaw for Minnesota. They were planted a couple years ago - actually my sister's garden. She just had shoulder surgery so I will be doing the rescue. She has heavy clay and so I may need to dig up a larger area and add compost. Were they planted to shallow? Heck if I know and I doubt she will remember from that long ago. How deep should they be? I guess I'll have to look that up.

Bulbs in general should be planted 3 times deeper than their own diameter. With lilies specifically having the advantage of each year's set of roots contracting when dead so that the bulbs pull themselves deeper as they grow larger.

Recently thawed soil should not be worked. Also compost always decomposes further and disappears. At which point a planting has to be reamended to restore the circumstances produced by the first application.

So this brings me back to, is it better to wait until after bloom to replant? What would you do?
