do you think the purple is from cold ... or its future color???

you may have to wait a few more weeks ... especially on annuals .. to get pix of true leaves to further an ID ...

and if you have lots of them.. try pulling one out.. to see if its an independent seedling.. or something on a runner ..

and i dont mean run out there for this one ... its rather common.. but its escaping me right now ...

Thank you, Ken. I hadn’t considered the purple could be from the cold. It’s entirely possible. There aren’t too many of this kind. A couple clumps of several growing together. I’ll keep an eye on it. There is some Vinca coming up close by, but those leaves look green without any of the purple.

Cunila oreganoides

They can form ice crystals in winter. The purple color is normal and is not caused by cold temperatures.

I am going to suggest that it might be beebalm, Monarda sp. with leaves still developing, or perhaps another culinary mint. This is one to leave and see what develops.

Monarda was my first thought as well :-) The fuzziness of the foliage and that slight purple tint is exactly what my emerging monarda cluster displays at this time of year.

In the second pic you can see flower buds that would rule out Monarda.

Thank you all for the feedback, I really appreciate it! The leaves do look a lot like Monarda. I’ll get some updated pictures to show how they’re progressing, but when I checked a couple days ago they were growing taller and still a lot of purple color to them. No flower buds just yet (I think the picture is a little deceiving and those are new leaves coming in), but I’ll check again and will update.

Crush a leaf and see what it smells like.

This is emerging Monarda. Do you think that the stems on these would be as thin, and as dark purple as the OP's plant when they grow another inch or two, like in the photo? Cunila oreganoides is also a mint so if you're going to do a smell test to tell the two species apart what smell will you be looking for? Well, Monarda smells minty with a spicy note and Cunila has a very sweet pleasant, strong minty smell. If you have already smelled Monarda , you should notice the difference. Cunila blooms in autumn after all the Monarda species are finished blooming. Yes, we should wait and see.

There are several types (both species and cultivars) of Monarda which will look a bit different. Patience and just letting this one develop will eventually show what mint family plant you have here.
