Asbestos everywhere? Please help!

I just found out asbestos is in old condos and now I dont know what to do with all my stuff. Not sure if this is the right place to ask but if someone has advice for me, please let me know! Thank you!

1. In my old condo i put 13 nails and 10 screws (by hand) into asbestos wall 4 years ago, took them out half year ago, both without cleaning dust, which was falling most likely right into shoes, bed, furniture, things stored under bed…If I was putting clothes on the carpet do you think the asbestos fibers got onto the clothes?
What should I do now?

2. In my new condo, company was fixing 10×10feet moldy floor. Under new

laminate floor there was old wood floor with paint spots and lots of white/yellow/grey dust. While they were tearing it apart, sanding it and put fan on it, the dust from all of this was going through all condo with furniture not covered. Looks like when previous owner had renovation few year ago they didnt bother to clean the floor and just put new on top. (they demolished kitchen wall to have it open, disturbed the ceiling with more lights and demolishing the wall, painted textured ceiling, remodeled bathroom…) Now how do i know the dust on the old wood floor which went to everything, didn't had asbestos from the renovation, since there could be asbestos in the walls, textured ceiling, bathroom, plugs… (the old owner told me the company didnt test asbestos before renovation of whole condo from year 1970)
I have no idea what to do.

Please help! Thanks!!!

I recommend that you relax. Asbestos exposure is not always a death sentence.

    There are tests for asbestos.

There are government and industry recommendations regarding your belongings.

Perhaps, stay away from your place, either DIY or hire Asbestos testing, then base your level of concern on data.

Give the asbestos a rest. It's not radioactivity. Geesh.

You havent even tested to see if it is asbestos yet. I wouldnt panic over something that is not even known for sure.

    Thank you for all comments.

The asbestos wall in 1. with 13 nails and 10 screws is 100% asbestos, confirmed by the manager of the building.

The dust on the floor in 2. not sure if its asbestos, but how do I test it? Since they were remodeling some asbestos might be already gone but still in that dust. The thing is I do not know what to test. I wiped already the dust as much as I could. I am worried its still in furniture, carpet, in my clothes, bed, and many places where its hard to swipe.... how do i test that? I know air test exist, but the "cheaper" ones are 400$ or more and I dont think they even detect all asbestos if its not in air anymore. They are more for after asbestos demolition. Plus I am very not happy that I didnt really do anything, 1. the manager didnt tell us when renting there is asbestos in walls 2. the fist company should have swipe and vacuum the floor before puting new one, the 2nd company should not send so much dust into air while doing it or wipe it before or someothing... and now I have to deal with that consequences and spend thousands dollars to make sure my house is asbestos free.

I guess I could have specialist come to test walls and ceieling and everything, plus the air test and spend 2000$ or 3000$ on this, but its so hard to spend my hard saved money on something what its not even my fault. And maybe will be even after all negative. I wish there would be another way. Plus the company can find some asbestos and use it as excuse to charge more for removing it...

True is I am really worried ist in all my stuff and I will breathing it for years or forever and everyone who visit as well and if i go someone visit i will bring it, if I give or sell someone some clothes or furniture it will be with it... I read it stays in homes forever. They tested those houses of asbestos workers and it was there after 20 years. Some say it cant be washed or vacuumed from clothes, carpet, furniture. I have no idea what to believe...

My DH worked in the public schools for 30 years and there was always asbestos around. I remember when I was little we had a big old furnace that was wrapped with what was probably asbestos.

Get testing done for your peace of mind. Then decide on a plan of action.

Hire asbestos testing and abatement service to determine what the actual situation is and get it fixed.

You could have some simple air testing done for a couple of hundred dollars. At this point I think you know just enough to scare yourself without having any idea of whether there is even any risk. Despite what the building manager says -- and I think he doesn't know what he is talking about -- I have no idea what an "asbestos wall" is, and I guarantee you that there is no such thing as 100% asbestos walls. Some walls might have trace amounts of asbestos in them, but the dust you're talking about is likely to be harmless. And I say this as an environmental engineer who spent 20 years dealing with toxic and hazardous substances, including asbestos regulation, testing, and removal/remediation.

@kudzu9 thanks! By 100% walls I ment that they know there is for sure asbestos in the old aparment i was living since they rent the whole building. He said there is asbestos in plaster and mud in the inner walls where I was putting the screws and nails and took them out later. I really hope the nails and screws are not as dangerous because I am sure many ppl put them without knowing its asbestos wall but I am just not sure if it could get into stuff. But can you please tell me what you think about the dust in the new condo i live (possible asbestos dust left after renovation 10x10feet, pls see photo above) on that wood floor if it was blown into the whole condo? How dangerous that could be? I wet wiped all the room and opened balcony where it was done but I am scared its in carpet, furniture, clothes, bed...not sure if air test would detect it in stuff? Thanks so much. I am really happy to see here someone who is working with it and have experience.

Even if there is some asbestos in the walls, most of the dust you see is just plaster and the amount of asbestos fibers that would have become airborne from putting a few fasteners in the walls is trivial. In addition, all living spaces have multiple air changes a day, and asbestos fibers are typically expelled quickly unless there is major demolition, such as when someone decides to remove a vinyl tile floor by using a sander on it. If you aired things out and wet-wiped, I'd say that the risk, if any, has now disappeared. You could have air testing done, but I am not sure it would tell you much. There are still many sources of asbestos fibers in our environment, so there is always what is called a "background level" of asbestos fibers floating around in the air. So paying for testing might show you a low level of fibers that is due to ambient air; the only time to be concerned at the results would be if you got numbers that were well above background levels. It's good that you are environmentally aware, but in this case I think you are concerned about something that is either a nonexistent or trivial risk.

@kudzu9 also the renovation was done like a 2 years ago so I do not understand why the renovation company would not test for possible asbestos in 1970 condo (the previous owner told me they didnt) in textured ceiling and kitchen walls what they demolished and bathroom and why they would not swipe the floor. Or is that how its done to do it fast and cheap so they rather dont test?

If they knew for certain that they were disturbing asbestos-containing materials, then they would have to follow local environmental regulations. But if they didn't have a test to confirm the presence of asbestos, they would not have been required to conduct one. This isn't the best practice, but it's the reality.

In any case, I don't think that what was done 2 years ago would now pose a present risk.

@kudzu9 Sorry for asking again and thanks so much for answering! I probably didnt explain well as its hard to write it, this but these were 2 seperate situation.

First is putting and removing screws in my old aparment with asbestos in plaster and mud in the walls. Nothing was wiped that time and the possible dust went to shoes, bed, carpet, stuff on floor...Put the 13 nails and 10 screws 4 year ago in, half year ago out before moving. Half year ago I took all that stuff with me to new aparment.

Second situation is in my new condo restoration company now removed new laminate floor 10x10feet (there was leak and mold under)

Under the new laminate floor was another old wood floor with paint spots and dust left from renovation what happened 2 year ago,

they just didnt wipe the floor properly and covered it with new floor (they were removing the kitchen wall to have it open, I am sure part of the textured ceiling was disturbed as well becasue of new long lights and the removing the wall in kitchen, bathrooom, new plugs...) This is the conco before renovation.

    This is new:

The restoration company now continued working on drying and removing the old floor

(with possible asbestos dust left from renovation 2 year ago, the dust was there burried for 2 years since the new floor was on top of it), taking it out, puting fan on it and sanding

with everything going into air and kitchen and living room and furniture.

So wondering if the possible asbestos dust left from 2 year ago renovation and paint drops from possible asbestos ceiling, if they were send to air to whole condo how much asbestos would that be? There was furniture and carpet next to it and stuff what i cant all wipe... After this I wiped all the living room and kitchen but I could smell the dust even in bedroom when they were removing the floor so was going under door even to other rooms. My most concen is how much asbestos could be in furniture and all the stuff what cant be wiped or hidden dust under beds and places where i cant reach. Thanks!!

@kudzu9 Thank you very much for explaining! I very very appreciate it, because I am worrying every day and I my body is in so much stress I cant even eat. All what you are saying make sense. Just to confirm though, since you said "asbestos that long ago dispersed", that the remaining dust from the renovation was blown into air just now, like 2 weeks ago. (I was saying 2 years ago but I ment that was the renovation date when they left the dust there and put new floor on top of it) but they blown it into air just now. Dont want to bother you anymore, but if that changes the situation on what u said please let me know. Thank you so much for your help! Very appreciate that!
