It is so frustrating and disappointing when a project doesn’t turn out as hoped. I’m sorry. In my experience once my accessories are on the countertop my eye rarely goes down to the floor. Do what feels best to you. Good luck

Rather than rip out your new kitchen floor, continue your wood floor in your family room so it's not broken up. Then follow Lil's suggestions.

Congrats on your new kitchen!

Ok, the floor is a bit busy, and we are all just staring at it, but really, who looks down and stares at the floor all day?

If you have tons of $$$$, go ahead and get something less busy, but you can leave it for now.

There are 2 schools for thought.

Some people want very busy floors because they hide the dirt.

The other school is, if there is dirt, I want to see it, so I can get rid of it!

You know which school you went to, and maybe your designer went to a different one.

The other thing is, since God invented the Swiffer broom and mop, I'm not sure there is a need to hide behind a pattern. Of course I don't have 5 children and 6 dogs either.

But back to your floors.

You have very little out in your kitchen, which also makes you and us stare at everything intently.

Most of us (maybe I should speak for myself) have more things on the counters to add color and interest.

You can try that for a while before you race to spend several thousands more dollars.

e.g. Colored dishtowels or potholders, a plant or two or flowers, several types of fruit or vegetables in bowls or baskets.

You can also try solid white or cream mats in front of the sink and stove, or those those thick gel types if you want to give your feet and knees a treat.

About the backsplash, it's fine except for the gold bars.

Please forgive my tiling ignorance, but do they have to take the whole thing down?

Can they just carefully, carefully pick out the gold ones and replace them with ones of the correct color to match the others?

I think then you won't even even notice that some are different sizes.

And about the floor, if you like it, but just not in the kitchen, if you take it up, can you use it somewhere else, like in a bathroom?

Save it and make lots and lots of trivets and cheeseboards to gift the entire school board?

Well, it does seem a waste to just throw away perfectly good marble.

@Janet De La Cruz, good call on getting that tile replaced. It isn't just the look and function of the tile in one room, but also how the tile fits in the overall look and style of the house. That tile belongs in a sleek modern Miami condo and not in a traditional/transitional suburban house.

This seems to be a case of an inexperienced designer pushing her own likes, and not knowing how to design a kitchen that actually makes sense with the house. The different flooring in the tv area, a tiny section of wood, and then yet another flooring in the kitchen. What has her response been? Have you voiced your dislike?

Not only is the flooring way too busy, it and the counters are cool white while the cabinetry is warm white - your designer should have definitely caught that. I think you could either a) repaint the cabinetry to a dark grey OR b) replace the flooring to match the wood. My preference would be b) because those floors are really loud, then maybe the cabinetry vs counters undertones wouldn't clash as much or be as noticeable - but, you end up facing repainting the cabinets to a cool white or other color regardless.

The worst elements are the floor and backsplash. Correctable with money.

I like your kitchen, I am not an expert, but maybe paint the gold bars in backsplash? Steady hand and precise taping? I like the pattern, the gold color is off. Maybe a dark gray or if you decide to paint island, match that. Otherwise it’s beautiful! I agree with a rug or two. Just breathe, and enjoy!

At a minimum try switching the floating flower artwork in the living room with the artwork now in the kitchen. Trading places. The bolder graphic of those flowers might work better with the floors and backsplash, even though you would need to get it framed properly if you wanted to leave it there.

I would just start with the idea of painting the lowers and/or island a dark color, adding hardware and rugs before I decided on a rip out of any kind. Also adding a vent with silver and gold could tie it all together. Then, if you still hate it you could move forward with redos

I like the idea of painting the living room side of big island darker. I think you need to put on your hardware & then add some interest on top of your cabinets & over the stove & dress it up. Once you have some nice things added it won’t look so stark.

I actually really like the floor. It's quite beautiful. I dislike the backsplash and the fact that there is no hood. I would pull the splash, do something a little grayer and do it up that angled wall over the cooktop. I would even go ad far as putting in a hood - it can be a dummy and used just for the light.

I also think I would make the color of the walls a bit bolder, richer.

I like a more intense space...

Try taking newspaper and painting it then taping it to the abase cabinets or backsplash to get a feel for how different colors will look.

On one hand, you already seem to dislike things, which means maybe you should change... However, although here clearly were some bad choices made, there could still be some remedy. There is lot of fighting between cool and warm tons and it is really hard to get a sense of what color is on the walls and ceiling; in one photo it looks white, in another very pink undertones and yet another it looks yellow.

I would start with lighting and making sure you have the right color/temp for your space. Then I would paint your ceiling a true white. I wouldn't touch the kitchen cabinets, but would maybe try to change the wall color in that area to help ground the space and tie it together better. Sorry to say, but I find the back splash way more offending than the flooring, I would redo that without a gold accent, just simple and continue up the wall behind the stove top. Also, accessorize with a runner on the floor and some wooden accent pieces.

If after that you still are upset, then change what you think.

I would run that laminate or whatever it is into the kitchen. I think the rest looks fine together and if the distraction of the floor were gone it would be much better.

Keep it it’s a foundation for a Persian Runner! bring back warmer hues to balance the cold base. Add some accent silk green plants and bring in your favorite color dishes even a warm white to blend the cool whites !

Add your personal items like appliances and under the cabinet lighting. it’s working just keep going.

Add a burgundy wood color table with Black leather upholstered padded chairs or warm table of your preferred color. trust your Own instincts to add variety to the unity created. And , you’ll like it! You’ll see!

I'm going to agree with the change the floor camp. It's very cold and unattractive, and I'm not sure why anyone would want a white/gray tile floor with white cabinets. Way too much white. As you can see from Janet De la Cruz' photos, a warm wood flooring would look awesome.

Also agree that the backsplash was not a good choice, nor was the installation done right.

I'd replace them both. No amount of teapots, dishtowels, flowers or fruits in bowls is going to disguise the poor backsplash and floor choices. Also, Persian rugs in kitchens may look good in photos, but they aren't very practical.

I don't see horrible and your gold hardware is a good direction with the accenting tiles, but the number might be too much.

Imagine tearing up the floor, uh no way in my mind. What about another carpet for family room in toasty color to blend with flooring, making just 2 colors in the open space. Paint for FR? I see a seaglass type blue lamp -- if liked, a color like it for paint -- but that looks great with white [of kitchen] and good with flooring/ FR.

Also good with grey with white etc. is yellow-green chartreuse/lemongrass. A new color palette might work to bring both rooms together.

Wow -- good for you, you went for the re-do! I'm proud of you -- it's very hard to rip something out you just sunk a lot of money into, but in the end you'll be happier.

If residential designers have licenses, hers needs to be revoked.

So great you removed flooring in kitchen! Now with new floor and cabinet hardware kitchen would look definitely better.

1. Thank you for answering me in what countertop you used. I am going to save up and copy your design, it is beautiful.

But most importantly;

2. THANK YOU for posting your story of starting over with this project!!

My husband passed away in 2019. For the 28 years prior to his passing, he had done everything around the house. I often joke that I feel like I’m a toddler who has been left home alone. We were always a team. A ver, very codependent team, to the point that I literally wouldn’t ever changed so much as our silverware pattern without consulting him first. We always used this app to save pictures and dream about all of the home improvements we would do just as soon as work slowed down, when we had the time. All of a sudden, I had all of the in the world. It took me about a year to get up the courage to attempt to do something without him, especially, something that cost so much money.

About a year ago, I got brave and decided to go ahead and finish the first thing on our list, our small guest bathroom. I spent weeks price shopping, and carefully considered each decision. I picked out new flooring, fixtures, mirror, vanity, hardware etc. I loved each piece individually, in the store, each piece alone was fabulous. All together? Absolutely hideous! I hate it. Nothing goes together. The floor clashes with the vanity. The vanity clashes with the mirror. The mirror clashes with the tile. The tile clashes with everything. Nothing works together. Not only had I’d I mess up with the finishes, the contractor that I had hired, (the son of a “friend,”) ended up being a drug addicted con-artist. The whole project ended up costing me about three times as much as it should have.

Even as much as I hate how it all looked, I couldn’t seemed to get over how wasteful it felt to just tear it all out and start over, especially since money is really tight now. But even worse, I had lost all confidence in my ability to handle home improvement alone without my husband. The whole ordeal has left me stuck with this hideous mess of a bathroom for more than a year now. Until this post!

Reading your post and seeing the pictures of your amazing before and after results has really given me the push that I needed. Knowing I’m not the only one who had to start over again somehow made me feel better, so THANK YOU! Seriously, thank you! I would’ve probably kept this hideous mess of a bathroom for the rest of my life had I not seen your post.🙏🙏

P.S. I have used this app to play around and daydream for years, but I don’t think I had ever seen this particular area of the app before now, so I’m going to count it as divine intervention. You’ve been a literal godsend.

@Sonya K. Wow. That is amazing and touching. I thought i was just sharing our disaster and venting out of a bit of anger. We love the pics of kitchens in your idea books, we would pick anyone of them, in fact all of the pics we showed the designers were basically what you show there. Find that one scene you just love and do that. No need in creating something. Use the Filters in Get Ideas for your space: Style, Location, Colors to get to your ideal space. Use your resources here for guideance. Thats how we found what we went with. Knowing our space did not match the picture but that it looked really great- all of the elements worked together - and so we assembled them for our what we thought would be a Transitional ( minus the cabinet painting, which would have been nice to have the first time around but thats ok b/c color trends come and go).
