I Killed A Black Racer = (

So awhile back I posted about how I rescued a black racer that became ensnared in bird netting in my garden.

Yesterday I found another too late to save. It was caught a piece of netting that had fallen down into some blackberry vines and I didn't realize it. I've been keeping the netting up high, bunched around my ripening tomatoes, not covering entire plants.

Very sad.

Hoping that isn't the only one in my yard. I appreciate having them around. Pretty sure it wasn't the same one because it was smaller.

At least your nets are not predatory, as is my neighbor's cat which has killed a number of racers in my yard.

Height probably helps, but racers like to climb. Highest that I have seen was in top area of mango tree where I also was climbing. It stayed in place despite my close presence, and the jostling of my pruning next to it.

Your neighbor's cat must be very fast!

I think they try to slither up through the netting and then wind up getting caught, so having nothing touching the ground helps, I think.

I just saw another one slithering into the bushes yesterday - thankfully.
