It’s a classic cottage look. I do agree with @tartenmeup that a more subtle combination would complement your soft p-looking maple cabinets better. Not to be a Debbie Downer but a close friend had this in her kitchen pantry and always complained that the white was harder to keep clean.

Agree with the above. Definitely a lighter pattern if you go this route.
My only concern is the style of the space is much more mid century modern than the classical tile look. Do you plan to possibly change some of the kitchen? Even just the hardware and eventually the countertops? If yes than I’d love the checkerboard...

Beautiful cabinets etc but I think a modern twist on the black and white checker design idea would tie in and pukl it all together, but keeping in.mind the end result should make you smile. Muted colors or smaller accents of bold colors and patterns were the focus and you could do something completely unique and custom. Some inspos for you.

Your mockup looks very 1950's retro. Personally, I love it! Am not the biggest fan of wood finish cabinets but yours pair up great with the black and white flooring. If you go this route I think your kitchen would be great fun to walk into in the mornings. Got to give you and A+ on this one!

I’d go with a gray-and-white checkered floor....it picks up the color of the counters and stainless steel better.

The shape you indicated along with the starkness of black and white are very specific and I don’t think will complement/work with your kitchen.

I like the idea though and if you want to use black, pair with a soft cream and used in a less stark pattern. Compare with above, it’s so much softer and more classic vs retro.

You can also use something other than black to work with your counter. For instance, Snow Angle with any of the other colors.

You could buy a few boxes of different tiles and lay down at least a dozen tiles to see how it feels and just return. I did this a few times when redoing our floor and it was extremely helpful.

Somehow I always think of older homes with the checkerboard flooring so that style feels like it clashes with your cabinets. I agree that a more modern spin on the black and white theme could give you that feel without the checkerboards overpowering pattern. The newer tiles have a nice balance of black and white. The one in the middle is painted on a wood floor which is an interesting idea if you already have maple floors.

I like the retro look it's def in. Are you considering painting or replacing the floor? It doesn't sound like you will do a full reno since you mentioned the cabinets are staying.

If you just want a quick way to inject some style you can add a vinyl runner:) over your already neutral existing floor tile.
