Eating plants affected by disease

I am a new gardener. This is my first year growing a small garden. 8 beds of varying sizes And will have varying vegetables and edible/medicinal flowers. My question is: Is there any instance in which you should not eat fruits from plants affected by a virus or disease? If so what are they? What do they look like? How does this work? are there any diseases or viruses which would pose direct harm to a gardener just by contact?
