Choosing a Container Tree for NYC Balcony

Hi. I have a small (18-24") Japanese maple growing in a container on our Northeast facing NYC balcony. It seems to be doing well and we thought it might be nice to add a second tree. We also have a baobab that lives inside during the winter and then spends May-September or so on the balcony and grows like crazy.

We'd love something that flowers in the spring, so the first thing I thought of was a crabapple tree. Though I believe I've seen lilacs growing well in containers as well, but wasn't sure if they might need more direct light. The balcony gets about 6 hrs of direct sun from the morning until early afternoon in the warm weather months.

Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
