What is going on with this Granite?

Good afternoon everyone! We had an outdoor barbecue renovated and brand new granite installed this morning while we were at work. We came home and installation is perfect but when we looked at the granite we saw this- what in the world is going on here? This can’t be normal!?

Any input before I lose it! 😭

That's glue blobs showing through. And they shouldn’t be. If your stone is that porous, it isn’t suited to exterior use. Exterior stone is typically dark colors that are virtually non porous. That’s really porous.

Oh no! Can that be the adhesive bleeding through? Hopefully a granite pro will comment. Yikes!

Oops, wait a minute. Silicone bleed is not usually that consistent in size. Measure the diameters and spacing, then measure the diameter and spacing of the vacuum pods in your fabricator's shop please. I'll bet they're identical. Pod marks can be fixed usually.

^^^ 2 guys carried my slab in that I suspect is about that size - I can't imagine anyone using 8 suction cup things on that lower slab unless they had hired an octopus for tricky installations.

but agree the uniformity of size / shape gives me pause on the cause, as well.

I am a fabricator. Looks like silicone bleed to me, I think spots aren't regularly spaced enough to be from vac cups. its a do over.

Definitely adhesive bleed. It's on the GC or the installer to remedy this situation (replace the tops).

A slab set on a block or stone substrate should be set with LHT mortar, not silicone. And an exterior stone choice should not be that porous unless you live in an area that never freezes. If you get freeze, you’ll get cracks.

@Jessica Thank you! It seems like everything we have done this year is one big DO OVER! Very frustrating!

I am waiting to hear from my contractor who ordered the granite and the granite company workers are the ones who installed.. Why and how did the granite company make a mistake like this??

SIGH! I wish I knew the answer to that question. I have had a frustrating year with renovations myself, but admittedly, my lack of knowledge and my own choices contributed.

Not a pro, but I haven’t seen others comment on this yet. It looks to be the alignment of the slabs also needs to be corrected. Good luck and I hope things work out.
