Thanks, we are near Rochester NY if that would help. I was hoping someone might recognize it, most plants are already up and growing here so it is a late riser whatever it is.

the longer the roots .. meaning perennial .. the longer it takes to warm the soil down thru the roots .. and to therefor break dormancy ... and that may be why its behind other things .. you cant compare anything based on that observation alone ...

it also suggests.. its not random seed.. since the surface soil warmed long ago...

so wait a week or two more.. and shoot us a pic.. and hopefully we can secure the ID ...

that said.. if you are visiting mom and wont be back.. slave labor for moms cooking.. or something like that.. just get rid of it.. and make her happy ... never screw with the cook .. lol ...

and.. if your curious.. take it with you .. pot it up.. and see what comes of it.. you can always gift it back to her for another meal .. lol ...

ps: i moved 60 miles from mom .. and visited every other weekend .. splitting w/e with bro .... and at 85 i had to tell her .. ma.. i work harder in your garden this two days a month.. than i do on my 5 acres .. lol ... but now that she has passed.. its those sunday meals i miss most.. and cant quite recreate ...

The timing is right for milkweeds to just now be emerging. It would have milky later even now. Once 1 or 2 sets of leaves unfold, it will be easier to know which species.

Thank you everyone! Milkweed is very likely! Her neighbor has a butterfly garden.... Ken you hit the nail on the head, spending a few days helping her with getting the garden in order. In any case I have moved it to an out of the way area and transplanted her rose in its place so she is happy. Thanks everyone for your help.
