Suggestions for trim

I lost my original posts for this. I recently painted my house. I did the trim in Sherman Williams iron ore and feel maybe I should have done just black. From the road it looks a little drab and dull. I don't have any of my flowers in or landscaping bloom due to its early in the season in the Northeast.
Anyone think the trim would look nicer in black /black rather than this grey black?, or any other ideas. The big trim around the door doesn't look nice painted dark I tried that before. I'm really sorry I lost the original post for this.

lol. I like the rocker. it's ok if it doesn't match exactly.

don't forget, once you get all of those plants (and the purple Flax) it will really make a difference.

the bright vibrant greens are a natural compliment to the purple, as well as gold. so try and find everything in that color range.

try modern masters shimmery purple for the rocker. I've used that paint. it's really nice. w/the metallic color it's really transparent. will look good over another color

i did this desk w/their Venetian Blue

Just saw they carry this color for their front door paint

Love the dark purple color on the door. Also like Beth's idea of painting the door trim IRON ORE.

I like this and the Bejewelled. But I'm done mixing paint. It's getting costly. If I can find a swatch like this I'll buy it. The Modern Master color is discontinued.
It seems what ever I try comes lighter than what I am looking for.

The pic of the house is at sunset.

What if we went completely opposite and went with a neutral color? White lol

    Hopefully we can find something.

Maybe I should paint the trim in iron ore.
    Woe is me...lol

Please give some thought if you can to the sidewalk, steps and porch floor. Not sure if cement paint comes in all colors. What is Grey lavender?

oh no. don't do white! Your house is so pretty at sunset. I happen to like what you've done.

why don't you live w/that awhile?

what do you think about this charcoal deck color, that has purple undertones for your porch/walkway? I'd do the two tone since you have diff shades on your walkway.

Gray/Lavender is just a tonal shade of gray with underlying purple tones.

    Like these:

I love all of these SW shades. You might check and see if SW has a porch paint or deck stain product and you can get it tinted any of these shades.

    these would be purple/gray colors.

Behr also has the porch/deck stain or paint. and the cheap sample pots. you could use that product and their paint colors. they will tint it w/any of their colors

remember when I said to help w/the cost and go to HD and get the Behr sample pots? they're only 2.99. they will match BM or SW colors. (won't be exact, but it will be extremely close) I've done this when I want to try out colors, but don't want to get 10 samples of BM colors.

This way you can try out the colors for a few bucks. mix a few to get your own custom color.

I took BM Hale Navy but got it in the Behr sample. Then I mixed it w/Behr Beluga (it's a rich black) and made my own navy based black color

I like the charcoal. I can only use a solid stain on the sidewalk and cement porch. That second pic is acid Stain whick you have to etch the concrete to allow it to work. The valspar solids are pretty good.

What about the brick pavers and stair pavers?

I will keep the door as is till I can figure out that color.

    What about this?

Where did you find the purple plum Swatch?

Maybe do the Lilac Grey and the bricks two tones darker? Or the charcoal

    last modified: 5 years ago

The purple plum swatch was a just that to show what the color looks like. it's not a paint color

But this one is pretty close

https://maisonblanchepaint.com/products/aubergine (it's a chalk paint. you could always do a glossy top coat)

    how about this one?

    https://www.myperfectcolor.com/paint/382932-gildan-aubergine

You can get it in a spray can if you want.

Pratt and Lampbert-Deep Orchid looks pretty close too

    here's that Kimono Violet again!

It’s tempting to keep tweaking it, but I think you’ve got it! I have a hunch if you added any more of the plum - on the shutters, etc - it would start looking too contrived. I’d keep the sidewalk and stoop just that quiet shade of charcoal you have on those border pieces. Just do it solid and let the house be the star. Add a balanced sprinkling of chartreuse and plum leaved plants, especially in your planters. Sweet potato vine and coleus come to mind. There is a great lace-leaved elderberry and “Tiger eyes” sumac that would look great on the corner of the house. Great job!

Did not see your picture with the door trim in Iron Ore and I agree with you that it is too much.

After a combination of Purple, Red, black and plum paint. I got this. Pretty close

yes you did! and 27 layers of paint later.......lol

    looks good. you like it?

(your siding really looks yellow/green in that picture)

Lol....28 layers.....cell phone pics are not always reliable.

Time to move onto the cement porch, steps and sidewalk

That’s a great looking front door and color!

Should I do the side door same color or leave it?

Beth, this is the house color

    just keep it like this

Lol.... I'm not going to change the house color. I'm not that crazy. My parents had me tested.

I'm going to concentrate on the sidewalk , porch and steps next . Like the lilac Grey bit not sure for the brick pavers and porch brick

    Beth, look at this:

Going to power wash porch, steps and sidewalk to prep for stain today

Beth, Are you on board for this for porch and sidewalk? How about bricks on sidewalk and steps

Should I paint side door on deck same as front or keep as iron ore.
Pouring rain. Nothing got done today

I like the side door as is.

do you have a better picture of what you're actually going to paint?

the sidewalk going up to the steps, and the porch floor?

what about the darker edging? that staying as is?

I like the shade of the brick on the steps. maybe a shade darker.

I'd have to see how the lilac gray plays w/the new door color. paint both on a sample board

    I'll get the Lilac tomorrow.

The etching is in the cement and staying. It's not a color it's actually a design cut out of cement.

Suppose to rain tomorrow but I power washed it today. It's dark now. I'll get a better pic in am

Might as well get moving on with back deck, fence, deck floor and shed.
I made the fence and rails myself and painting them iron ore. What about the deck Floor?
Also the fence surrounding yard and shed?

Just power washed. I'd like to stain the porch and sidewalk one color and the brick on the steps and pavers another.

I'm so jealous of your weather. it's 93 here today and 13% humidity. Then I see pics of your lush green grass and overcast skies. heavenly!

ok, so colors. I don't mind that current color of your painted bricks. I think the purple-blue/gray tone actually works. Why not choose a darker, lilac toned charcoal color that goes w/it?

or, if you still want to redo the brick, try two of these for the dark and light. they are all purple grays. the lighter ones are lilac grays.

I would rather have the sidewalk and the top of porch light and the bricks dark. The Dark cement gets so dirty I have to clean it every day, where the lighter I don't.
So if I did the sidewalk and top of deck in destiny or lilac Grey, which darker color for brick?

Beth. I'll trade anytime. It's going into the 30ies tonight and 50mph winds. This is why I wait on my flowers.lol

i love cold weather. from now until November I'll be dying from the heat! (anything over 75 is too hot for me)

I think either of those two darker charcoal will work w/either light color. I actually love all of those shades. I need to find a room in my house to paint those colors! lol

Destiny floor and Mineral grey or serious grey....bricks

Mineral is more of blue/based gray. which could work,,,and Destiny more lilac gray. so you'll have to see how they look together. I like that one w/Cloak or Perle better.

mineral gray and serious gray would be nice together.

    I'll do the Destiny w/ cloak....ya think?
The brick takes a while to paint. Can't get paint on the grout lines

The destiny looks too light for the floor. What about the Lilac Gray for the floor. What should I use for the brick?

just pick one of the dark and one of the light. up to you which one you want where. or do it all in one color. I like the two tone option. any combination of those 6 colors will work.

Destiny and Cloak. Love the Cloak. I think the destiny is too white next to house

oh wow. yeah, looks very light.

I like Moonlit and Cloark/Perle. they're dark enough.

the Cloak is pretty w/the door.

you know what you could do, carry the Iron Ore onto the cement. look at the column next to cloak looks nice. and you won't have to bring another color into the mix.

I think I better do the moonlight because the iron ore will be too dark on the sidewalk.

Or mix the Cloak and Destiny?

you can try it. but use very little destiny.

Beth, I don't mind the sidewalk and porch light. Needs to blend into the house like the sand did prior

Been off the grid for a bit but got a chance to work in porch. Before and after.

    that looks great Dave!

Got allot done today. Bushes are finally blooming and bought some flowers today

    last modified: 5 years ago

dave, it looks great! the colors are lovely. do your neighbors like it?

My neighbors love it. I have low voltage lighting, (not solar) on the house and under each tree at night.

Beth , thank you for all your help

Your fence is stunning. I cannot believe you made it.

What an inspirational thread. Great work, Dave, and Beth, and others.

Thank you all. Time to work on the back of house.
