Oh Ken. I asked myself that same question before, during, and after repotting. In retrospect, I should have just topped it off with fresh soil. It was about three years old. roots were sticking out on top and the soil was not holding any moisture. I watched a video on adding sugar to gardenias after reporting and the science behind it.

To repot, I watered the gardenia the night before. I tried not to disturb the root ball too much but loosen the middle roots to allow for growth. This also allowed me to separate the multiple plants a bit. Then watered well in the sink. I put it back in it’s very sunny spot. That may have been too much also. Pic is attached. Wondering if I should cut it back. Thank You for your time.

just stop loving it to death.. of what good might it be to cut off its canopy ???

even damaged leaves can process light into energy ... put is somewhere you cant see it.. and dont do anything to it for the next month .. but water properly ... it will either die or recover .. but its going to be a slow process .. and you heaping love.. on love on love.. can not speed it up ...

im sure the sugar hasnt anything to do with this.. regardless if i believe the idea ...

you said you returned it to the spot it was in ... i hope that wasnt in sun??? ..if so.. never put a new transplant directly into sun.. its roots are disturbed.. and if cant pump enough water to offset the sun ...

no more applications of love.. prayer if you wish .. otherwise.. benign neglect but for proper watering .... [though personally.. i dont know if i would pray for it.. i would fear i am granted one response to prayer.. and somehow i would waste it on a plant.. lol ... i might need to save that for the cat ... or maybe the kids.. it depends on the day ... lol]

Lol. Thanks Ken. I’m finding that advice to be true for most indoor plants. I’ve been doing hospice with my dad for three months now and other than this stupid gardenia, I’ve done nothing but sporadic watering and they all seem happier now. I should have left the damn thing alone. Grrrrr.
