Experienced HOUZZ designers! Your take on Laundry/ Bathroom Combo?

Decisions, decisions… As first-time home buyers, we are in the process of finalizing our plans, and could use some feedback. Dear experienced HOUZZ designers, what is your opinion about Laundry/ Bathroom combo?

More specifically, we might have an opportunity to add a Bathroom in our 4-Bedroom house which right now has only 2 Bathrooms. And this is including the Master BR. So, a third Bathroom is needed and will be VERY appreciated. Also, the laundry space is too tiny, but we hope to eventually move it to the Garage (3-car space currently.)

There is a space that used to be a tiny Master WIC. The problem with it is that you have to walk all the way through the Master Bathroom to get there. Not only that, but the valuable square footage in this not very big Master Bathroom is just wasted because of this. Also, widening the WIC into the current Laundry space doesn’t make sense on so many levels. Apart from the fact that you’ll have to get there through the Master Bathroom as mentioned before, all the water/ sewage pipes/ access are already there. Moving the pipe work to another spot will cost $$$.

This 3-d Bathroom/ Laundry option could be for our now half-a-year old baby since it’s right next to his Bedroom. We see some options, but there may be other options we don’t see, so we are open to them too! Please, feel free to point them out 😊What are pros and cons as you see them of combining BR/ Laundry? As for Master WIC, there is an option to have a bigger one in another space.

Let's clarify your question so you can get more help. I think you are saying . . if I want to add another bathroom, the only practical space is adjacent to another bedroom and the laundry is sort of near there .. . is it worth it to add a bath to serve the baby bedroom? Should I think about the laundry in a different way? or combine them somehow? Is this your question?

If this is your question, add a small bathroom adjacent / accessed through the other bedroom. Someday your baby will be a teenager or the people who buy your home will put one in that room and the bath will help sell your home. If the laundry is on the hallway - great. If it opens into the same small bedroom, switch it and the bath so the bath can open on the hallway and the laundry makes the small bedroom a practical workspace . . consider every layout for all three elements if they are changing them around . including your new master bath. Or take the space and make your master bath more luxurious . . best answer so far!

Thank you, Kenneth! It could be either a combo or a separate Laundry and a separate Bathroom #3. Connecting the resulting BR #3 to the Baby Room is a great option then, just like you said. The tiny Laundry near there is entered from the hallway. What I mean is that we are thinking about moving it into the Garage area, but possibly not right away because of budget concerns. Love the option of extending the Master Bath! But... There are other needs too :) so not sure if we'll go for that though.

I really dislke laundry on a second floor so maybe a bit more info. IMO laundry on the main floor is just more practical . I hate having to run up and down stairs for every load of laundry .This is my first house with a main floor laundry and now i would never do it any other way.

/\/\/\ I've only had one house with a first floor laundry and hated it! Was so happy to get the laundry back on the floor with the bedrooms! Isn't it good we are all different!

I’m with Patricia, main floor laundry. But it is helpful if it’s an actual room and not a closet. I spend most of my time on the main floor, so having to trek upstairs to move clothes from washer to dryer is a pain. But, I guess it depends on your household and how you run it. As soon as my kids were big enough, it became their job to bring their laundry basket down to the laundry room. Each kid had a specific day. Then it was their job to take the basket back up and put the clothes away, this was just a part of their weekly chores. As they got older, they had to put the wash in the washer and get it started and help with folding when they got home from school. They also learned to strip their beds and such as they got old enough. I would usually make the beds back up, but they knew how to do it and would when they weren’t covered up with school and activities. So for me, main floor laundry was perfect.

Gotcha, can you do layout showing surrounding rooms. It’s hard to know what to move without knowing impact on adjacent space.
