Omg beautiful suggestions @slumgullion in southern OR!!! Blessed child is so so so pretty! How well is the repeat and does it stay long on the plant?

Blessed Child repeats very well for me, and it keeps blooming much later in the year than many other roses here. I think in L.A. it may well bloom year round! And the blooms do stay on the plant a good while, they don't blow quickly like some do.

I live in the same area as Slumgullion, hot summers and if I had for a hedge it would be Olivia Austin.

We grew "Grandmother's Hat" as a hedge, and it was spectacular.

If you don't mind a smaller flower I might suggest Hermosa or even Pink Pet, although that one can get huge in the right circumstances.

The Huntington Garden has Hermosa and our Lady of Guadalupe. They both had such a spectacular spring flush one year that I started checking them out every time I went. I was disappointed that both seem to not bloom all that much in the summer but have more of fall and spring flush. They are both very short roses (there anyway) staying 2-3 feet tall.

Interesting. I wonder if that Has to do with the water or heat. I know Lily finch has what near her that does very well. It does quite well for me I just planted a tiny 1 last year and it's already putting on nice size. And it's ready to give me a flush. This is a rose that started blooming from the get go and never stop till the fall. I also have Setina, it's climbing sport. The strange thing Is that sometimes it is not fragrant at all but at others it is heavily so.

May I recommend PINKERBELLE:

1.) exhibition form hybrid tea bloom, 2.) vigorous and disease free, 3.) tough enough for a hedge in its traditional definition, and 4.) fragrant.

@Rose Beginner Zone 9b LA, Here's a picture of Blessed Child from last year (she's in the foreground, with Mme Pierre Oger behind)

When the picture was taken, I had never pruned her because she was young. Last winter I did some pruning and now she's more bush-shaped.

I planted her where I can see her from inside the house, so I can look at her all the time!

(Also, I should clarify - the fence is to keep deer out, not because she needs support.)

I'm sorry to say in hot, dry California, Pinkerbell looks awful in about 10 seconds. It wrinkles and turns brown like a paper sack. If you are considering it I would strongly recommend you wait until June or July and go look at it in the nursery before you buy one.

Ha! You don't miss a thing!

As much as I am smitten with Quietness, its 'Achilles Tendon,' is its shortish individual flower life. It does not crisp or wilt in the highest heat here in PA, which trait it may prove to retain in LA. However, only during spring and fall do the flowers last a week or more before they drop their petals. During the summer's high temperatures in the mid-80's and above, here in Pittsburgh, it drops its petals at about day four. It does produce a profusion of blooms, but the 4-day bloom life may disappoint in LA.

If you don’t mind a little shorty - Bonica is good in sun or shade. Also super easy to grow from cuttings.

How tall of a hedge were you thinking about? How about Desdemona or Blush Noisette?

Blush Noisette is another one of my favorites...love the clove scent...is more white than pink though....

If lavender color is ok for you, I'd like to recommend Fragrant Lavender Simplicity. Mine is own-root and grew 3.5 feet tall in its second season last year. I cut it back to 2 feet and now it's 4.5 feet tall and has a bunch of buds. Upright and prolific blooming, IMO, great for rose hedge.

That's a great idea. I think all of those Simplicity roses were sold for hedging.

Vapor, yes they were. I bought it just because I love lavender roses and I need to plant it along the sidewalk. I didn't have much expectation about it. However, it has been one of my most easy-to-grow roses. I'm so impressed by its disease resistance which is rare in Seattle. No BS, no PM, no rust. I'm so glad to have it.

Noseometer, i was thinking of around 4-5 feet tall hedge. Desdemona was on my mind too but its super hard to get hold of DA in my local area this year. :(

I saw this today the nursery so I took a picture for you.

My MPO is still pretty young, so it only started repeating last year. I think it will repeat more and more as it matures; but I can't say for sure yet.

I think MPO if you plant it in LA you should make sure it gets some afternoon shade. The sun turns the blooms darker and they lose that fragile, ethereal quality I treasure so much in her. Also, I recommend siting her away from any spray irrigation to minimize foliar diseases. (She hasn't had a lot of disease in my garden, but I think if she gets wet/humid she may not do so well.)

You'll like Blush Noisette. I have found, though, that it is arching/spreading, and I think some have grown it as a climber, so it might not be a good hedge.
