Help with old track lighting!

I want to replace this old track lighting that's in my kitchen. I know nothing about electrical stuff. I don't think it's hard wired in because it has that ugly cord cover thing there. I'm wanting to replace it with some nice pendant lights that are hard wired in so there won't be a visible cord. It already has a light switch. I was going to have someone from Lowe's do the installation but I'm just wondering how big of a job this is going to be and how much it will end up costing me if anyone has a good estimate? Thank you!

yes it's hardwired. it operates from a switch, yes?

please, don't hire anyone from lowes. you'll pay more money because lowes is the middle man.

look on local source guides for electrical handyman, or local contractors that do electrical, light work. check reviews.

do you have the Nextdoor app? you can find a lot of referrals from that

or try a local Yelp page

Oh ok, yeah it has a switch. So why does it have the ugly cord cover then? The pendant lights I'm wanting to get show no cords. But I think they are usually installed into already existing recessed lighting, which I don't have. So would this be like a from scratch install or can they work with what I already have? So I can buy the fixtures and everything from Lowes and then just hire someone else? I'm just not sure all that I would need to get.

Your home was built with one electrical box in the ceiling over the peninsula, that's wired to the wall switch. The track lighting fixture you have is attached to that one electrical box with the track providing the power for the 3 hanging lights. (The long piece is called track, not a cord cover.)

If you want to have 3 hanging lights without a track, you'll need an electrician to wire 2 more electrical boxes into your ceiling. You may also need to move the one electrical box that you have, if it's not in the right place. If so you'll need to do a ceiling drywall repair.

You can buy what you need from Lowes and have an electrician install it.

Obviously it bothers you but to my eye I don't think the white electrical track is noticeable against your white ceiling, and it will look almost exactly the same after you've spent the money. It is not really a small job for an electrician.

If you don't like the pendants, you can buy different ones. There are different kinds of tracks so make sure that the pendants you buy are the right ones that fit the track you have.

if the cord isn't plugged into an outlet, then it's hardwired.

yes, they can modify and use the electrical that's there.

buy your pendants from wherever, just don't hire lowes to install it! (unless you want to pay more) Lowes hires independent contractors just like you would. the only difference is you're paying lowes for finding them for you!

If you already know the pendants you want, you can have those on hand. Hire someone to install them. they will go and buy anything else needed to finish the install for you. you pay them for the materials they buy.

You may have to have some drywall repair since that track is coming down. not sure what's beneath it.

the other option is to do a double or triple pendant, w/one canopy.

but, I assume you want something like this set up

BTW, what is that blue? is that paint?

The cord cover I'm referring to is on the wall, it's painted blue to match the wall. I'm not really bothered by the track on the ceiling. I'm going to paint the ceiling white anyway, the track is old plastic so it almost looks gray. I don't know if I can just paint that white to match? But I'm really wanting to get rid of that cord on the wall. Does the cord just need to be hidden in the wall somehow? And I can easily change the light shades but the hanging cords are a yellowish color. Can those be changed out? What do you mean when you say it's in the wrong spot? https://www.lowes.com/pd/Portfolio-Bronze-Transitional-Pendant-Light/3774169 https://www.lowes.com/pd/Portfolio-Bronze-Transitional-Pendant-Light/3774169 These are the ones I was thinking of getting. They are similar looking but I'm not sure if they'd be easy to convert from what I have.

I can't really tell from your pictures. looks like the cord is hidden in a conduit? at the bottom, is that cord plugged into an outlet?

Regardless, a qualified electrician can hook you up and fix this mess.

and no, please don't get either one of those from lowes. they're worse than what's there!

Back up and show how that conduit on the wall relates to the light switch and the track on the ceiling. I suspect based on the switch/ outlet combo that this was added later tapping into the backsplash outlets for power and the conduit hides the wiring from there to the ceiling. Just a guess of course. It looks like you are painting so you want to do this before you get further so the drywall and paint repairs only have to be done once.

Does this help at all? Yeah I definitely want to get this done before I paint. I have to get rid of that nasty blue color! I have a lot of jobs like this on my hands from the previous owners. 🤦‍♀️

When I said that the existing electrical box may be in the wrong spot, I mean that it may not be where you want to put a light if you want 3 light boxes equally spaced. Now I see what you mean by the cord cover.

what in the world? does it go into the wall and hook up w/that one outlet?

    strange.

just call in a licensed electrician. (get referrals from Next-door app, or look on Yelp. )

he'll come in and fix it.

you could have holes like this done for 3 seperate pendants

Or, they'll make one hole and you can have a triple pendant light like this one. (similar to what you picked from lowes, but this one is better looking)

    or something like this

    This one is on close-out

Regardless expect that drywall will have to be cut into to eliminate the surface run wiring.

That makes much more sense to me now, thank you. I appreciate everyone's input! So basically I can get 3 seperate lights installed which would look better, but it'll be like triple the price probably. I can get one fixture with multiple lights kind of like I have now but ones that would look much better and that would save me on the cost. The biggest thing I want to get rid of is that cord on the wall. Yeah that's blue paint. Don't ask me why. It's awful and matches nothing else in the house. So I'm anxious to get this stuff done so I can't paint! This probably won't be my forever home, so it doesn't have to be perfect the way I would want it to be if it was. I just want to make it look better and anything will be an improvement on what it is now!

corrine, that's basically what I said up in my first comment, without going into detail about what has to be done, because you weren't going to understand it! I tried to post pictures showing the 3 holes, and the electrician will run it from the wall switch. I said you could have 2-3 separate lights, or the one w/the 3 attached.

Don't worry about what's there now, or how it works. It's going to be removed.

An electrician will clean up everything. just decide what you want to hang there.

Shop around online like Wayfair, or lamps plus, or try LampsPlusOpenBox. com They have discounted lighting but limited choices.

are you keeping that backsplash tile?

BTW, if you ever want to replace the tile, remove that 4" granite piece up the back and take the tile down to the countertop. that 4" piece can be pried away from the wall. there are youtube videos of it.

I'm not a big fan of the backsplash but I'm on the fence about how much work and money I'm going to want to put into this place. If I do the backsplash then I'm going to want to redo the countertops and the cabinets and I just won't be able to stop I don't think. This is my first home and I don't really know how to do any of this stuff myself. I can find the videos on YouTube but it doesn't take the place of an expert opinion on deciding what I should do, before I attempt to do it, you know? Thanks again for all the input!

I would hire an electrician to come and give an estimate, and explain how things will be done. Then go get your pendents, and have him back to do the installation.
