Wired doorbell problem help

last modified: 5 years ago

Hi

Hope someone can help with this issue we’ve run into. We’ve just built a new home and had a wired doorbell wire/chime installed.

Unfortunately some idiot cut the wire to the doorbell at the front door. So I can’t connect the doorbell to the chime which is powered by a transformer (16 or 24v).

I was looking for a product that can send a wireless signal to the wired doorbell chime. But I’ve come across nothing yet. Does such a thing exist? I’ve found a bunch of other products but nothing that meets my needs.

The wireless options I’ve found are consist of a chime you plug into an AC power supply which isn’t what I want as I have a wire hanging out of the wall for the chime.

All help appreciated

There's wireless options that use a battery for the button and chimes at your local home improvement store or Amazon. They also make noise when the battery is low.

What is that photo of? The desired location of the doorbell button (with a little piece of wire poking through)? If so, you could probably chisel out enough wood to grab that wire and splice an extension onto it - remember, this is low voltage. Get a button large enough to cover up the opened up hole.

    Hey

    1. So a wireless button that can be stuck on the entrance, which can send the signal to the doorchime on the wall which is powered by a transformer. The only ones I've found use (for wireless) are battery or AC powered which plug into the wall.

    2. We're the home owners - the wire was cut by some homeless person that thought the 12 inches of bell wire sticking out of the wall could be sold for drugs morethanlikely.

    Cheers

@mtvhike so it's where the wire was cut. I did try and grab it using a needle nose pliars, but it seems the individual pulled the wire first then cut it.. so there's no slack. I guess I could cut a larger hole.. bit reluctant to do that in brand new hardie shingles..

Maybe I can take another look.

    pookieman-

    1. You're not going to find a doorbell that works without some power source.

    2. Enlarging the hole enough to get at the wires will only work if it's big enough to splice extensions on to the existing wires, and that would require stripping insulation off the ends of the wires in the hole, soldering or crimping new extensions on, and insulating the splices if necessary... which would likely require a bigger hole than you want, and some fairly good DIY skills.

    3. It might be easier to cut into sheetrock on the inside to get access to the wire ends and repair them, and then do a sheetrock repair.

    4. The only other option I can think of is to fish a new wire into the wall and run it back to the transformer.

Your best bet is to just abandon the existing chime & replace it all with a wireless (battery powered) doorbell. There is generally no way to leave a service loop in the doorbell wire so that you've got there is likely all you have. As you said, it's not going to be worth the work or material to hardwire another button.

I hate being dependent on battery powered devices, so I would do what kudzu recommends.
