It is a Magnolia Ann and the care card that came with it says it will grow to a max of 12 feet tall and 10 feet across.

'Ann' is often sold as a multistemmed shrub, so its current appearance is quite natural. It really does not require any pruning, which is best left to a minimum with any form of deciduous magnolia anyway.

pruning involves having a plan .. in how you want to shape the future of your plant ... think topiary in the ultimate ....

if you have no plan.. then you dont need to prune ... except for removing broken or dead parts ...

no plant just needs to be pruned ...

and boy does it look like you have enough room to let it do its own thing ....

Yes, just leave it alone. If, by the summer, those leafless tips prove to be properly dead you could cut them off. Otherwise let it be itself.

Pull the mulch back away from the stems. Otherwise you bought a specimen already developed by the grower as a shrub so if you had wanted a single stem tree the thing to do was buy one formed at the production facility to have that shape at time of purchase.

Thank you for the various comments. I received it as a gift when a family member passed away so I did not have a grand plan for It. That said, I do think it could look good where it is as a large shrub so I think I’ll just let it continue to grow as is.
