Need to set this room up better what do you recommend?

Need help with setting up this room better. What would you recommend here?

As you can see I have a computer desk, a 65" tv on a cube stand at an angle, a truck box below the bay window, black curtains, and another cube that acts like a dresser, and a filing cabinet.

I would like to know the best way to set up each of these items within the room for the best comfort and feel when you enter. I took several pics to show how the room looks from the point when you enter it to all the way left and right. I plan on upgrading the curtains and the bedding very soon plus whatever new furniture would make it look better overall. I'm fixing to get rid of the cube and put a dresser in, but I need to know the best way to organize the room overall with the furniture it currently has. Does the layout look fine or would you change it up a bit? please let me know, All design tips are welcome. I want to spruce the room up a little bit.

I would put the TV over the fireplace, the fan in the corner by the narrow window, and the exercise equipment on the far side of the bed. Put some shelves over the desk for your photos.

I watch the tv from both angles. I will draw up a sketch in a minute.

From the door to the wall with the fireplace its 12 feet

From the wall by the tv to the bay window its 20 feet

So I just need to figure out the best layout for this room. The bed is a queen size.

There are too many items in the room.

Place the TV over the fireplace

Center your bed on the wall with nightstands on either side

Place the desk in the bay window

Place the tool chest in the least busy corner.

Can I just say, this is a first for me to see a tool chest as part of a bedroom decor :). If it needs to stay, perhaps you could put a cushion on top of it. I would look for

Thank you all. Keep the design tips coming I am definately reading them all. I am going to buy a tv mount tomorrow to put the tv over the fireplace.

Sorry.....it looks like you have every leftover piece of whatever in a storage room. A bedroom doesn’t require all that stuff, and it doesn’t look relaxing. I personally don’t like a tv over the fireplace...it’s much better over a long, lower dresser. One picture is hidden by the huge tv, a small one is too low and the other is waaay too high. Put a painting over the fireplace instead of hanging stirrups and a hat there.
Remove the dinky things from the mantel. The window curtains are too dark and flimsy. There are too many unrelated things and too many electrical cords. I like the two-tone green walls, but they don’t work with the bedding.

@felizlady Maybe not everybody has a 4000sqft McMansion. I’ve lived with exercise equipment and computers in my bedroom most of my life and they needed to be there. I never keep a TV anywhere but a bedroom.

If your storage box is strong enough to sit on, outdoor bench cushions might fit it nicely and come in all sorts of designs and colors

If you can’t sit on it or could use some extra storage for everyday items, you can find lightweight boxes and drawers to set on it that are use easy to move when you need to move them to get into the big box and are low so they won’t clutter the window. They are great as sock drawers and other smaller items to keep the room looking organized

Hey @ginatay124 and others who live in houses with bedrooms that are solely used as bedrooms:

Most of the world needs to use bedroom space for work, exercise, TV watching and storing things other than clothes. In Italy, where I live, most bedrooms have cheap plywood built-in cabinet units that completely surround the head of the bed (to the ceiling) instead of a headboard — which helps — but I’ve still got a computer and desk in my room, bookshelves, art storage bins (those are TOOLS) and exercize stuff. I don’t have 10 other rooms to put it in. When I lived in NYC and SF it was the same. Not everywhere is American suburbia, and American suburbia ain’t as stylish as it thinks it is. Multi-function studios can be stylish and relaxing, and creative spaces.

Hi Mike, I hope you know I was teasing about the truck box. I’ve lived in studio apartments for 20 years in three countries so I’ve done my share of living with my weights and computer in my “bedroom.” But a truck box is still a first for me LOL. What I was going to say before I got cut off is to look for outdoor chair or lounge cushions that fit the top of the box, maybe in a cream/white similar to your trim color. You might have enough room to put the box at the end of the bed like a bench but only if it leaves you a good 3-4’ of clear space for walking around it. Regarding new bedspread and curtains, I think the choice of bedspread will dictate some other color choices in the room such as art, curtains, and pillows, so you will want to get that purchased sooner rather than later. Do you already have something in mind that you like? Do you like a quilt type bedspread or a duvet? Do you want to keep black as part of your color scheme? Regarding a dresser, I have used a captain’s bed with drawers underneath to eliminate the need for a dresser. They have a ton of storage.

I took no offense to it. It actually made me laugh when you said its the first time you've ever seen a truck box used as bedroom decor. I just laughed at it, so no worries there. Its kind of a neccessary, because I use it for storage of all my records. I've probably got 10-12 years worth of receipts with boxes in it in there. Thats pretty much its whole purpose. When I sold my truck I had an extra truck box laying around so I thought hey why not, lets get some use out of this thing. I can remove it if I had another way to store my 10-12 years of receipts, but as you can see the space in the room is kind of limited. There is no closet whatsoever to store those documents in. I have roommates too so I can't really store that stuff elsewhere, but my bedroom. I'm always open to options though.

Sorry @ginatay124 for reacting as I did.

I had two nightstands in the garage so I swapped them out and centered the bed last night. The room still looks overcrowded though. When I originally designed my bedroom suit and built it myself I made two nightstands, a tvube, and one cube for clothes but as you can see I move the clothes out of the room and stored them elsewhere. You might say I'm a bit into guns too :). I just have to clean them up a bit to match the decor more. I don’t really want like the way the left side looks too much but I’m not sure what to do with the file cabinet. The bed looks offset, Because there’s way more on the left.

Bean counter here....do you really need to save all those receipts? I save only as far as I could be audited for taxes and buy/sell info on real estate. If you could get rid of some of the paper off-season clothing could go in the tool box. Could you use the tool box as a tv stand?

    last modified: 5 years ago

Does the truck box lock? Think you need lockable storage for the guns. Put the weights in the same storage with the guns and no one can make off with it all.

To answer your question yes, gina. I kind of want to stick with a black theme as my top 3 colors are black, red, and blue. Which doesn't go too well with green walls lol. I've always just purchased bed in bag or one time I did this. That was how it looked with the desk moved around to the other wall with a red and black color scheme. The sheets were red, the comforter was black, and it had red pillows too. I never thought about using the truck box as a tv stand. Thanks, colonel I will have to try that later on when I get home from work tonight. Just too see how it looks.

If you like western style (like I do), you might find a quilt set on Rods.com that you like. I would purchase a king size for a queen bed because you get a nicer looking overhang that way, plus two regular shams (they make your bed look nicer in the daytime and you can lean on them when watching TV). I couldn’t find any in black, but here are a couple that would coordinate with your walls:

Fix your layout before anything per Beverly's suggestion.

Do you like the feel of this room?

Kids Tennis Theme · More Info

If so then get a plain charcoal quilt bedspread, green blanket the color of your wall. Run a wood ledge over the bed for your photos and some interesting black and white art prints. ital movers' red and green print of the two green doors is great. That takes care of the framed stuff on your mantel and random art scattered around the room. The visuals will have more impact together, plus it gives you a headboard feel.

Place your desk in front of the big window, again per Beverly. Get bamboo roll-up shades for the windows the color of your mantel so it all goes together.

Ditto Beverly on the nightstands with two matching lamps with red or green bases that look like the ones in the picture.

Get red outdoor cushions for the truck trunk. That's your seating.

Basically, what you're doing is reducing the visual clutter and the actual clutter so you have solid color "fields" charcoal/black bedspread, plain green bedding, art displayed in one spot, use of bay window, which is wasted now.

Don't know where to put barbells, but if everything else is decluttered and not visually cluttered, then no problem.

I agree with comments to reduce visual clutter. You asked about what to do right now. Here is a layout that gives you a WFH area, gym area, and BR area. Majority of people position the bed to see the door to feel most secure at night. The desk can be turned depending on whether you want the light coming from behind you, or if you want to face the window. The truck box is too low for comfortable TV viewing but makes a good bench for end of bed to sit and put on shoes, don’t pile up stuff on it.

Future purchases suggestions. Gun safe. You might want to consider a deadbolt lock for BR door. Low-profile head board that attaches to your bed frame. If your cube nightstands height is within 1” - 2” of the top of the mattress, they are the recommended height. Pair of wall sconces that hang on the wall and plug into an outlet for over each nightstand (stick a cord channel down the wall to hide the cord), which frees up surface space for other things (like cell phone charger). Take advantage of vertical space with tall narrow storage with drawers for your clothes. If your cube TV stand puts the middle of the TV screen at your eye level when seated, it is the recommended height. A comfy chair to watch tv from fireplace area. Not sure why your records date back so far? Avoid bed in a bag. Get 2 sets of white sheets, and a comforter

And pole lamp by the desk, so you don’t take up workspace with a desk lamp

If 2 people don't regularly sleep in this bed then you don't need a night table on both sides. To save space you can attach swing arm lamps to the wall at either side of the headboard. I would put the bed

Thank you all for the suggestions. All of the furniture was built to work with the bed. Its at the exact same height of the bed.

Very impressed you built your furniture. Can you build a tall wardrobe for your clothes? Take advantage of vertical space.

Can you get an 18” bed frame to have more under-bed storage?

Thank you all, I went ahead and implemented the layout as suggested. Thank you marylut. Very nice design diagram each with its own space. Is their anyway you could make a design with the command position against the wall with the 3 pictures hanging. There is not enough space for two nightstands and it looks a bit odd with it offset from the window. Also please notice that the nightstand was made exactly for the bed's height as I said before every single piece of furtniture was.

There is barely enough room to walk thru at all on the left. To me, it looks a little bit odd with it uneven against the wall and the window. I have decided to get rid of the truck box and the filing cabinet. So you can remove those two pieces from the design.

You guys are awsome and I really do thank you so much for your help. Please let me know of any other setups you think might work. I never had a problem with the bed against the wall where the tv was until I started reading up on command positions. Apparently you always need to be facing torwards the door. If you think its better there I can always swap the layout around again. I am open to suggestions. I have the day off from work so I will be trying out these new layouts to find the perfect fit for this room.

The command position of the bed facing the door is based on feng shui. It is a traditional Chinese practice. Not based on science so I do not subscribe to these beliefs. Obviously YMMV.

Hi, Mike. Moved bed as you suggested. Still has view of BR door. Maybe harder to see TV from bed, though. Of course the bed IRL was awkward...I didn’t have fireplace and narrow window in right place, how far is each from the corner? How wide is each?

Windows may look more sophisticated if you had more drape panels (each panel should be 2 times the window width, or double up on panels). If you want to keep the black drapes because you don’t own the house, get additional panels with a black and white pattern and add them to the existing rod. The current fashion is to hang drapes about 4-6” down from ceiling and almost touching the floor.

Mike, I like the advice you've been getting, and I love how quick you are to try different things. My opinion: if you are asking if things are still too cluttered, that means they are.

The TV and large stand would be one less thing in the way if you mount the TV above the fireplace. They also have mounts that come away from the wall a bit, and swivel so you can watch it from bed and from desk.

It seems all of your pieces are low. You mentioned earlier about buying a dresser. Maybe a highboy dresser would be best - for the visual height. Let's ask the people here who are more expert than me.
