Your paint color selection for the home is way too yellow IMO.

Select WHITE for the building and paint the trim the color of limestone like you see below. It will look the most natural.

paint your garage doors to resemble wood.

After that's done your lot needs a ton of landscaping.

a good trimming of that palm tree is in order. can't even see the front door

any chance of chaging the doors? if not, give them a good sanding, prime and paint a darker color like this Iron Ore.

You have the height, do a spanish style pendant light. or, get a new side light

big difference in the color. of course landscaping is huge. try bringing in more cacti or succulents w/yours. maybe a mesquite or palo verde tree.

for your garage door, can you upgrade it or do a newer one? a new door will really make the redo on this home .

you can get the wood look. it sure would make a difference. I'd also get the Carriage Hardware (amazon) in the black iron to go with it, shown on this lighter door

I agree that the current color has strong yellow undertones. And would love to see something more white. Or cream.
Get some samples.
I like black trim.
And yes all the “pop outs” LOLOL should be the same white color you end up going with.

Thank you Beverly for your thoughts. My thought was to get a creamy white (not too yellow) for the exterior wall color with a deep brown (almost black) for the front door and garage door. Definitely need to find just the right white without too much yellow! Any recommendations? I noticed in the 2ndpic you posted that the house is a creamy white with a dark brown garage door and front door. I’ll see if I can pick up a variety of whites at the paint store as samples. Dunn Edwards is the favorite in Phoenix, but I certainly have access to all the others as well.

Beth – Thanks for all the before/after pics! They helped a lot! You’re right about trimming the front palm tree! It’s on the schedule! Unfortunately, a new door isn’t in the budget at this time, so I have to make due with painting it a cool updated color. I loved the Iron Ore suggestion – Looks like Benjamin Moore and Sherwin Williams both have a similar color. Was trying to stay in the deep brown-almost black color though. I do prefer a double door – makes it so much easier to load furniture in and out.

Yes – after painting, we’ll consider new lighting. I’ve asked my DH to clean all the outside lights so we can remember their true color! It’s likely faded over time. Plus, people keep banging their heads on that side light by the front door!

Alas, a cool new garage door isn’t in our budget, so we’ll have to make due with a cool new color.

We moved away all our potted plants in preparation for painting, but will be looking for recommendations once the painting is done. Have to remember that we’re in a hot, dry climate here in Phoenix! Limited lush landscaping here!

I really like Daydreaming. I like Renwick Brown with has a bit of gray where as Espresso has red. Another color to consider for the accents is Sorrel Felt which is pared with Renwick, although I can see keeping them white and not accentuate them.

I like the garage door, facia, and rafters in Renwick.

Can you have the palm tree professionally move to the left side of the house? Palms have a shallow root system, so I imagine they can be moved. They look great, but block the front door.

what about painting the roof fascia trim in a dark color? that all white is too white.

the dark fascia (I didn't do it) paired w/the darker garage door lends some contrast.

If anyone knows anything about Hues, Values etc. Here is what DE says about each color. On paper, Trade Winds is much more on the grey side and Daydreaming is more on the vanilla/tan side.

We are also in the Arizona desert. It seems that there have been a lot of attempts at “modernization “ of Spanish or territorial style homes by painting them white with dark trim. The most obvious fails are those with starkly contrasting black and bright white. A warmer, creamy white, as in some of the renderings, is more soothing in the desert sun.

Beth – Yes I saw your stucco with Swiss Coffee. Love that color and have used it on my interior ceilings, doors and trim.

I never KNEW that the garage iron hardware was magnetic and so easy to put on! I am sending my DH tomorrow to pick one up at Lowe’s and we’ll see how it looks. I noticed that 95% of them were on White garage doors. We’d planned to have a dark garage door and My concern is that they wouldn’t show up against the black. I’d really love to use them, so now rethinking our color scheme. ☹ We could do a dark trim around the garage door though and use the same dark color on the front door, fascia and window trim.

Regarding Black Bean and Black Tie – I DID consider them – MY DH really likes the black contrast against the 2 lighter colors we’re considering for the body of the house. He will pick those up in the morning as well and we’ll add them to the sample mix.

it shows ups against the brown if you want to paint it so that it looks like wood.

here's mine again. the black trim around the door w/the white frames the garage.

As for the light aqua door, its only paint! not a big deal to change it. try something different. It's way under the porch so it's not like it's going to be a blue beacon! try something soft and muted.

Is Tradewinds one of those sample whites you have? I paired it here w/the wood color garage, Black Tie, and two blue colors

what about Whisper or the Swiss Coffee? I think they're a bright white. even Cottage white is nice I've used that color. the Navajo White is very beige toned.

Beth - Would the garage door hardware look too “Carriagy” in a southwest environment?

I’m assuming painting your garage door to look like wood takes a certain skill set – like a faux finisher. Not sure my painter can do it.

We had thought to paint the garage door Black Tie (thanks to your suggestion) as well as the fascia, window trim and the front door. However, I am Really intrigued by the light aqua blue door surrounded by Black Tie trim (you sent a pic above). How do you think Dunn Edwards Lake Reflection – DET556 or Island Oasis DE5730 would look on my front door?

• Body of house – Daydreaming or Trade Winds (DD seems to have more yellow than TW, which appears to have more grey – at least on the paint cards. However, we can’t tell the difference on the walls. ??)

actually, I think something like thise would look great. at least the 4 corner things and the two rings. handles are nice too. but you see how these look Spanish and not 'carriage-y" ?

I love how they did this one. see the dots? just use those if you like. see if you can insert some of the grid windows in the upper row. maybe new lighting. (and you can easily paint this yourself!)

Beth – First of all, thank you sooooo much for all the thought and research you’ve done to provide me with some ideas - you’ve given me a lot to think about!

I guess we’re not huge fans of the Weathered Blue color. After you tempted me with the photo of the Aqua door with the Black Tie trim, I ran out and got Aqua paint samples to try out on our front door! Luckily, we haven’t painted it on yet! (Note – I know Lake Reflection can look a bit “Caribbean/Beach House,” but I DID see it on the list of Spanish-Mediterranean colors….. sooo maybe????)

Although we live in a desert, we don’t really care for desert landscaping, so I’m afraid the yucca idea is not our 1stchoice. That said, we’re all about potted plants and plan to do some near the front door, having recently taken out 3 boxwood shrubs nearby.

DH and I did a drive around of the surrounding neighborhoods – here's what we saw:

• 98% are Southwest colors – tans, creams. Garage doors primarily are the color of the house.
• We saw a number of garage doors that were either painted to look like wood, or were the aluminum that looked like wood (yes, I actually got out to ask a homeowner about his garage door).
• We saw quite a few of the decorative garage door hardware – so much that we’ve now nixed that idea. We will probably stick with a Black Tie or Black Bean garage door/fascia.
• We saw virtually NO house where we loved the paint job.
• The 2% that were more ‘contemporary’ colors were underwhelming.

I loved the pic of DE Mission White (it looks a lot darker on the card) with the black fascia/garage door. But I’m wondering if Black Bean would be a better choice for this climate than Black Tie since it’s a brown/black rather than a black/black.

Since you thought Trade Winds was on the "dull, grey" side, I was wondering what you thought of Daydreaming vs Swiss Coffee for exterior (both are on the Spanish-Mediterranean list). Being in the hot Southwest, it feels like a warm creamy vanilla (not too yellow) would look better on the body of the house exterior than a bright white.

I AM a fan of Swiss Coffee, since we have that color throughout the interior of our home (ceilings, baseboards, interior doors). So I guess that’s also an option for the exterior.

Which would pair better with that - BB or BT?

Here’s where we are NOW - which isn't a lot further than a I was a few days ago 😊:

• Exterior - Creamy white/vanilla – not too yellow or grey – soft, but bright, but not stark ‘white.’
• Garage door / front door / fascia (BB or BT?)
• New lighting
• New house numbers

Garage Door - Black Bean is the square left of center; Black Tie is the square right of center

Whisper on the 2 upper corners of the garage - (just cuz I had it)

Trade Winds on the left column; Daydreaming on the right column

Need to finalize paint with the painter by next Weds.

I think swiss coffee is a nice middleground between daydreaming and whisper. but if you really like daydreaming, use that one. it's doable.

i'm not familiar w/DE colors as much as the other brands. looking at SW, what about some of these? maybe Raindrop or Watery is less 'bright turquoise' ?

I stuck in the agave plant because of the colors. I did a xeriscape yard on our rental and have a bunch of catus and succulents (im in so cal and only get slighter cooler temps than you. although, we do have many 105-110 days in the summer where I live)

this was it years ago when I first did it. all of those have grown 5X the size in this pic. I actually need to get down there and prune the heck out of everything. that agave plant is now as big as the back end of a car!

I think brink in some color through these succulents and cactus would look great w/the colors of the home you choose.

instead of red/brown rocks or mulch, choose a gray or black color

Front palm is now trimmed up. Added DE Whisper DE 340 (left side of horizontal pop out over the garage) and DE Swiss Coffee DEW341 (right side of horizontal garage pop out) to the mix for the house wall exterior – although I really can’t tell them apart in the photos. Any help for which would be better for the exterior???

• reminder – Tradewinds on the left pillar has been eliminated; Daydreaming on the right pillar may be too yellow – the yellow really shows up in the morning sun

Many painters like Dunn Edwards as the ‘go-to’ paint here in the desert Southwest.

Wondering about Black DEA002 vs Black Tie DE6357 for the fascia and garage door (what sheen???). Both are paired with Whisper on the DE web site…. BT is painted on the right center square panel on the garage door.

RE the FRONT DOOR – for fun, we painted a couple of poster boards Dunn Edwards Lake Reflection DET556 (which is on their Spanish-Mediterranean list) and Spearmint DE5729, although they appear virtually identical. A safer choice would be one of the Black colors, but suddenly DH likes the surprising pop of Aqua…. Many of you have said that you can’t see the front door – you can see it better from some angles. I guess we could start with the Aqua color and if we didn’t like it, could change it to Black later….. an easy fix, right?

BLOCK WALL – do we paint the wall the same color of the house? It’s currently the same color as the house, but we thought that a white might be a little stark for us in the back yard. Currently the wall is kind of a subtle backdrop to the plants, but a white wall would provide a brighter background. The plants would really pop against it, but would it be too bright? Should we paint a color that is more subtle?

Pay no attention to the lighter stripe - we tried out a lighter color but it had a pink tinge.

I'd leave the back wall. it blends in w/the landscaping. if you do a white you'll need sun blinders to walk outside!

either of those 3 whites look fine.

Black tie isn't as deep as Black. Up to you what you like. It's going to look dark no matter which one you use.

the sheen for trim should be a satin or even a semi. glossier paints last longer in the elements. dark colors are going to rapidily fade in the sun (I did wroght iron on my trim and it's already faded. Use the best exterior paint finish you can afford. they should have UV properties in them to slow down the fade.)

I do like the aqua on the door. (that light though,,,,,)

This is a lighter aqua than what you have. almost a sky blue^

remember, next to the white it's really going to pop. which is fine.

why not wait until the stucco is painted and then try the sample on the door? (make sure you sand and prime that door before painting)

Yes I agree that the whites would be blinding on the back wall. So we’ll keep it the same. But what about the wall in the FRONT? Should it be the white – to match the front exterior or keep it the same (look odd???)?

Oh yes – the porch and garage lights are the next decision! In fact, I’ve been looking. Probably going to stick with the side front porch light for now rather than a pendant – even though everyone runs into it!

Also next up – new house numbers, clean and seal the pavers, potted plants.

Hadn’t even thought about the front door hardware. Definitely adding that to the list.

wow! That looks so good. what a difference! love the numbers and the light too. if that's a mulch next to the grass, think about switching it to the black instead of the red. it will compiment the house colors better

Wow! It looks SO much happier! I would still change to a dark black Spanish door set just in case the turquoise door comes back into discussion. It has the right “feel” for your house.

Beth - thanks for all the suggestions for the front porch! Since I didn't do the Aqua front door - serious remorse there..... :-( -- I am now on the hunt for the perfect Aqua rug to layer under a welcome mat. Since it's 110 - 115 right about now in Phoenix, I'm doing this online!

Plus I'm scoping out containers and plantings that will survive our hot summers, with a mix of seasonal annuals for the front. I have a pretty good handle on the annuals, but am a newbie when it comes to succulents - things that won't outgrow the pots for a few years.

No need to regret the door color. It’s a can of paint and a couple of hours on a day when you really, really want the turquoise. The house looks great as is. :)

Gigi, the gutters can be painted. or if you need gutters, get them made in that color.
