Pinching Rhodos for branching?

I have beautiful rhododendrons in the gardens on a newly purchased home but unfortunately they have gotten quite leggy. I’ve read that pinching back the terminal leaf bud will promote branching and help promote the growth of buds from within the older wood. My question is, how do I know what new growth is the terminal leaf bud vs a flower bud? All the new growth shoots look the same to me. My second question is, if I pinch off all new growth while deadheading, will that promote branching just as well? I suppose the only drawback to pinching back new growth from the end of a branch is that I could lose next years flowers.

Thanks for the help!
