Ditch permanent cooktop?

Thinking my new island too would be so nice without a cooktop installed, instead use those portable cooktops and just put them away when done. It would look so nice and clean.

Put your cooktop on the perimeter then. I agree that a kitchen without a stove is not really a kitchen. More like a huge pantry.

I have wondered about doing the same thing...especially with the (portable) single induction ones costing only $100. I guess it wouldn’t really work if you are constantly using 3-4 elements at the same time?

I have a portable induction. While I appreciate the extra space it gives me, I can't really stand using it for anything other than rice or pasta since it's not vented.

You have a cooktop on your island, which makes me think you don't have a vent for it, so maybe it's a moot point for you. But for me, it's an absolute non-starter. I wouldn't buy a home without an exterior-vented hood. Or a cooktop, for that matter.

There are induction units that can be hidden under granite counters for warming and low heat cooking. That still would not give you ventilation for the cooking byproducts.

A ”kitchen” contains a permanantly installed method of cooking your food, venting the vapors, keeping it cold, and cleaning up from that work. Even if a home does not come with appliances, it still must have the locations and means of installing those apppliances. Windows can satisfy the ventilation requirement in some locations, but never take the place of a hood designed to capture grease and odor.

I actually already have a vent built into the counter for my current cooktop, a down draft vent.I wasn't really worried about that. I've actually have seen many posts about that topic , I would want venting but many people don't have them at all.

I was just wondering if anyone had seen something like this before? I have wall ovens already and they would stay.

I got the idea at Ikea, a kitchen display had just the portable ones on the counter, I thought that was kind of a good idea. My cooktops get beat up whether they are gas or glass top so putting it (or them, multiple) away would look nicer.

As far as "keeping it cold" yes, I have a fridge lol :) and :cleaning up from that work" I have a sink too!

Interesting a kitchen must have a permanently installed cooking device to meet the definition of "habitable". After you have permanently installed a cooking device anywhere in the kitchen and vented it, it makes good sense to use portable induction for any purpose - of course in a reasonably safe location, with sufficient venting. It's your domicile, you can rip out the stove and replace it when ready to sell the house.

If you beat up your cooktop, that probably means you use it. I can't imagine solely using an induction hob for everyday cooking but YMMV.

Get an induction cooktop and put your portable ones on top of it if you don't want your induction top to get beat up, I guess. From everything I've read, induction cooktops clean up really well and I think they look sleek.
