Grass isn't growing. Too much thatch? Moss?

Help! First time home owner with a lawn and I'm really struggling to understand what's going on with my lawn. There's a lot of moss and thatch in it I believe, which prompted me to already moss killer and buy a dethatcher. Now it seems that my grass won't grow. There are still multiple patches of tan residue that seem to be blocking the grass from growing. I really don't know what to do other than continue to dethatch until I see soil.
