I agree-nothing to lose. I would try it, but bear in mind that I know nothing about grass-we have practically none-mostly clover and other things most people don't like.If it doesn't work, I do know fall is when you should seed.

We just removed several hundred square feet of sod to expand our driveway - and put it 12 feet over - it’s been 10 days and it is thriving (we’re watering it 2x a day) - we did rent a sod cutter which cut it out nicely. Yes, you can transplant that sod. Rough up the soil well, tamp down the pieces, and water, water, water. We have a grand dog who stays with us while her family is on vacation, and we are usually gifted with brown pee spots. I have used some of the sod pieces from edging my beds to fill in with great results. Did you apply a crabgrass preventer this spring to your lawn? If so, seeding won’t work well for another few months, anyway. You would have to wait until fall. Sod plugs should do better.

@chloe00s No, we haven't put anything on our lawn. It's far from perfect; I just don't want the ugly bare patches. It's hard to have a dog and a nice lawn at the same time.

For 4 sq ft just use a square-point, flat bladed shovel and not a arched point spade with a curved shape.
