How can I tell from the pictures if the canes are lax enough to trail?
The first 2 look beautiful! I think I have seen Above and Beyond in a local nursery, too. Quadra has other pictures that look really pink, so I don't think I would go with that one.
Would you only plant roses, or add in other flowering vines?

Red is a very hard color to capture, unfortunately. Are you open to once bloomer's? Where do you live in zone 4?

VaporVac it is! I just purchased Red Ramblers for a different area of the yard, and they looked as red as Quadra, and still came out dark pink once bloomed. I am a little gunshy now, I guess. I am in eastern central Minnesota, just a little south of zone 3. I don't mind a once bloomer, as long as I can pair it with other vines that will prolong the flowering season.

zepherine drouhin has soft & thornless & lax canes & can be trained as the bush gets older. It's a once bloomer in 4 hrs. of sun in my garden, it's an own-root from Roses Unlimited and the fragrance perfumes the air 30 feet away. The blooming period is more than a month. I like this way more than my reblooming 140+ fragrant roses.

Strawchicago that sounds amazing! I would love the fragrance!! I am only seeing it as a zone 6-11, and I am a 4. Is there something I am missing?

HMF is wrong about the rating of Zepherine Drouhin. It's the most cane hardy in my zone 5. It's always green to the tip for the past 5 winters.

I only got it this year, so I can't say much from my own experience, but from what I read once-blooming Baltimore Belle (setigera hybrid) could work for you.

I also grow a cultivar of a native coral honeysuckle (lonicera sempervirens) 'Major Wheeler', and it blooms constantly from early summer till October (large flush right now, then never without at least a few flowers). It's bright true red, not pinkish red. I planted it last spring and here it is now, really a very vigorous vine. Hummingbirds love it.

I was wondering about honeysuckle vines. I haven't seen a lot of them. I love yours!

I grew Lunar Mist until voles ate the roots out from under it. It is a sport of Colette, with the same fluffy blooms in soft yellow and more flexible canes. I loved it and will plant it again. Mine was about 7' tall trained on a trellis, but would have gotten taller if it had lived.

I don't grow Above and Beyond, but have seen it at the Rosarium, formerly Northland. I wish I had planted it a couple years ago when I first saw it, but I chose another Colette. It's very beautiful with it's blooms of varying shades of apricot to cream. It has a prolific spring bloom with less blooms the rest of the season.

If once bloomers are OK with you, check out the rambler family of roses. Very lax long canes, super vigorous and hardy -- but strongly armed with thorns!
