Don't use a gray rug. It will look very dull and will clash with your wall color. This is your opportunity to add some color, pattern, and personality to the space. Since your furniture is streamlined and modern, you can use a more traditional rugif you want to. You have stripes in your sofa fabric and with your window coverings, so I wouldn't add more straight lines on the rug. You can use deep jewel tones, or pick one color you like - almost anything will work with what you have. Reds, navy, greens, gold, orange, etc.

Or just use a highly patterned rug if you want neutral colors.

I really like the rug in your mockup. It adds to the room.

I think you would be better off with a rug with pattern.

I’ll chime in on the dog part, having had several and always the same problem…..a cut pile rug works best as a loop pile always gets caught by pooches nails and pulls. So you end up with loops sticking up. And if you cut them off then eventually they pull out and the rug looks bad. It narrows down your choices (cut pile) but that’s my reality! Flat weave might work depending on how flat and your dog!

Everything in the room has sharp corners, rectangular shapes, and everything is low. You need some tall piece of furniture, a floor lamp, window treatments (even a pair of stationary panels framing the big window will add height). A white rug will always look a bit dirty. For the new rug, I would consider one of the current washed-out Persian-style rugs in a bigger size. It will bring in muted color and offer several colors you can use for accent pieces or art.

We might suggest you try finding a rug with a little bit of color or texture to help your room feel complete. Here are just a few rugs from various designs of ours to inspire you:
