The "opening" must be a standard electrical box. A standard electrical box can't be "too small". Pull the plate and post another picture please.

The box could be too shallow for this particular 20 amp receptacle if there is a pigtail and interior clamp in it. A deeper box and proper plate screws may be the answer.

If the size is a problem for you, get a receptacle without the USB ports.

I‘d bet that the outlets were forgotten about until the electrician showed up. Then there wasn't enough room in the required location for anything but a shallow work box. It all has to be planned out from the beginning.

@mtvhike Do the USB ports add depth?

In some cases. I was installing receptacles with USB ports in several locations in my house, and in some, I couldn't get them to fit - depth. I didn't check if there were other mfrs which were shallower. This was about 5 years ago.

I've also had problems installing GFCI receptacles in existing boxes.

Just as an aside, how far are they from a water source? If less than 6’ from a water source, the receptacles need to be GFCI receptacles, which the one pictured is not.

There was masonry close behind my backsplash, and my electrician had to chip some out in order to get the receptacles at the proper depth.

This is probably ground fault protected upstream, if necessary.

Looks a lot like this receptacle so the install in normal.

The cover seems a bit thicker than normal & is a different style than your covers.
