Please help!!! Paint not matching

last modified: 5 years ago

My husband and and I recently bought some paint samples from Samplize. We loved the SW Crushed Ice for our kitchen that we’re renovating because it’s a beautiful light grey. Or, so I thought!

My husband just painted the kitchen and the color is pretty off from the Samplize sticker sample. I stuck the Samplize sample on the new painted wall and it’s noticably different! It looks much more blue. From what I’ve read online, Samplize are true to color. Could this be because I got the color mixed at Lowe’s (they carry HGTV Home SW colors but said they could mix any SW color) instead of the actual SW storefront? I used a Valspar primer, could this be why? Super frusterated because it took me a long time to pick a color and it was a tough area to paint in. Please help! Thank you!

Chips,......sticker samples........paper samples. Forget it. They will take you to the woods, but not to the exact TREE in the woods.

The only way to test a color is with a quart rolled on the walls.in the intended space, In your light, and against the other elements in your space.

Need an example? I have a favorite gray . Benjamin Moore "Wish" AF 680, WITH THE CHIP FORMULA HALVED . It looks beige in the can. : ) It varies with the light in the space. I have used about a million gallons as it is a beautiful misty vapor on the walls; works with nearly everything.

I have used "SW Crushed Ice. Have a little painted board of it in the closet. Looks just like it does on your wall. Which means, maybe crushed ice isn't what you want against your cabinet gray.

In this case? Find a great Ben Moore store. Take a drawer face with you. If what you want is a whisper of the cabinet tone in the paint? You are likely to get the help. Test..in the store on small boards. Look first in the tinted white category. You want a customized color. ....which is the beauty of paint. It can be customized to a fraction of a shade .

You STILL have to test at home. ......in your lighting.

I'm not seeing the problem with the color on your wall. I think it looks pretty good!

IMO if that was an issue you needed to buy a sample can of the paint you were planning on usung and tested it in your space BTW all the lighting should be LED 4000K in every fixture in the space .

What was the sheen of the sample? A different sheen can look like a different color on the wall compared to the sample. I lived and learned that one recently....

IMHO....I think your walls look great with your room!

The sheen of the sample was eggshell which is what we got in the actual paint. I’m just so confused because everyone online says Samplize samples patch perfectly since they use two coats of the actual manufacturer’s paint!

But thank you! It may be growing on me just a little, it’s just such a big commitment!

I just did my master in Hale Navy.... I love it now, but initially it was so different on the walls than on all the testing and samples that I did it was seriously gut wrenching after all that work! It grew on me though over some time and now I love it. Neighbors and friends that look at it gush over it and I have done enough home DIY projects to know I overly focus on minor flaws no one else can see until they are pointed out. LOL!

Live with it and get some friends in there to compliment your hard work and you will start to love it. Good job!

There IS no such thing as a paint "commitment" . It's paint. That is the beauty of paint. Do overs may SEEM a pain. But relative to other changes? High impact and minimal everything else. Testing is a pain, but no getting around the ACTUAL paint test.

It is confusing. Because it seems like the loop from chip to sample to wall should be simple. But there's a lot of stuff that can get in the way of that working smoothly.

The only way to sort out what happened would be to measure the Samplize sample and the gallon and compare CIELab values to the CIELab values of a paint chip. Because paint chips are the control in the loop. The Variable apps for Color Muse and Spectro 1/Spectro 1 Pro have a "compare" feature for tasks like this.

How much of the difference between sample and fully painted room is likely due to the reflection of one wall onto another?

I suspect that the difference is the substrate that the color is on. That piece of paper with the sample may give off a different undertone than does your wall board.

I dont think that it is as obvious as you feel it is, from the photo.

I recently had some color match done at Home Depot and I have to say that is really a very good match for my decades old paint job that needed refreshing. I was very pleased with it.

I dont see any problem with your paint .

Also, a wall full of any color is going to look different from a small sample.

    It looks just fine, really.

Also, to note, the color of your surrounding cabinets is bound to reflect on the wall paint.

Really, it looks great! Quit worrying about it.

Even the reflecting light from your countertops will influence it.

I have heard of people who choose a bright and bold color for countertops only to find that it influenced the other color elements in the room way too much.

Yours are light and white, but they must still reflect light onto the wall.

    Relax! It is just fine!
