A seven foot wide closet will give you two feet depth of hanging on each side with a three foot wide walkway between. Save islands for vacation destinations.

By my math, you should be able to fit a roughly 5'x5' island in the very center, assuming you put hanging rods along the short (11') walls, and leave 3' of walkway around the island.

Now, this leaves you with big blank walls along the 15' sides (doorways? mirrors?), so if you want to put shelving (12" deep) on both of the longer sides, the island would shrink to 3'x5'.

You need to decide if you want to use your closet for hanging or an island because you can't have both. I would not put an island in your closet. As @One Devoted Dame said, you would have the longest walls of your closet empty, or with narrow storage, in order to make it work - which is a waste of closet space IMO.

In fact I would probably reduce the width to 7' or so and use the extra 4' elsewhere since you don't gain much except dance space by making the closets wider than that.

My closet will be 12*15. I plan to put a 3*5 island in, only 3 ft walkways. One side will only be 1ft deep shelving for shoes and such to get the 3ft wide island.

For your 12 ft depth, you could do 1ft shelving on opposite sides with the 3 ft deep island. Or do 2ft deep hanging on one side, and nothing on the other side (mirror/etc instead). Or you could do 2ft hanging on 1 side, and 1 ft shelves on other side with the island only being 2 ft deep. I really think 3ft is the minimum I would want to go for an island. For my 1 ft deep shelving on the 1 side, I am actually stealing that for only a 5ft width from another space...so part of that wall will be only 11 ft deep with no shelving, and then the shoes will go in the stolen space that is 12 ft deep. So maybe you could steal a small length from another room (husbands closet where his shoes would go?). This is more expensive when it comes to framing though.

I really wanted the island in my closet....but would have also loved to have a chaise lounge in mine, so maybe you could do that instead? My mom has a bench in hers, but I do love the closets with chaises or couches!

Skip the island, chaise lounge, and bench and go straight for an Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman.

Shape and island aside, I'd start with measuring the amount of hanging and shelved clothing you have. I'd always want a place to sit while dressing and undressing, a place to fold garments, a place for laundry, a mirror, and daylight lightbulbs. Will you store all your clothing here, or will you store some out-of-season things elsewhere? Might you want an ironing board (need electrical outlet for iron)?

Our his and hers closets are too large or us at 6 X 9. They flank a short hallway between MBR and MBA and have pocket doors (usually left open).

My shelves are 12" deep, and my sweaters and things hang off by about 2". 14-15" shelves would be so much better.

I'd totally do 15" deep like Mrs. Pete suggests. My husband wears a size 15 shoe, so his shoes wouldn't fit on a 12" deep shelf, especially his steel-toed boots. :-/ Measure everything you have, just to make sure, lol!
