Larger. Can you pull it away from the threshold a few inches so it’s centered between the threshold and the staircase with an equal amount of wood around the long sides of rug? It will look more like an entry rug and less like a giant doormat that way.

Consider a square or round rug and be large enough to fill 3/4 of the open area.

if that larger one was just a tad smaller, it would be perfect.

The larger one. Just pull it away from the door.

The larger rug encroaches into the traffic path between two rooms, otherwise I would prefer it. The small one serves the purpose of wiping one's feet without causing a tripping hazard by catching one's foot on the corner of it as one traverses the space. I opt for smaller.

With style of your items, I don't like the larger diamond, but the smaller.

As far as they rug style, remember that the foyer's job is to introduce you, your style and serve as a hint at what to expect in the adjoining space. Not sure the rug you show does any of that.

I'd use a runner so you get the length in front of the whole doorway as you have with the larger option, but the walkways between rooms and near the stairs are free of hte rug.

I also thought of practicality - if fits in front of the door, it's ok.. where people step. People used to wipe their feet - do they do that still? hhaha.

I thought the outside welcome mat is where people wipe their feet! I wouldn’t want anyone doing at on my entry rug.

Thank you for all of your suggestions. I removed the shelf thinking maybe that would help. As for my rugs matching my decor…the room that you see off to the right is the part our home that we have not yet updated. I am rather traditional but I like a lot of floral patterns. I also need a runner that matches the front entryway. I have looked for almost a year now for rugs. I guess I felt this rug was neutral but still added some interest. Keep your suggestions coming.

Your wood floors are beautiful. I'd remove your runner and small rug in the hallways. They are not functional there. Try your runner by the front door and if you like it, have it cut to size. Your shelves look crowded in the hall. If you don't have another space for them I'd put them back in the entry.
